I agree that optimization used to be critically important in the past....Now it sucks.There are even a lot of users who think that it's just technological progress forward, so the demands will be higher...
But in this case we are talking about indie "joes" games, where devs simply have no clue how to handle game engine and all that unoptimized and stupidly implemented garbage is simply killing your HW and performance.
And as you say. One of the few things that every user should do with bad UE5 is force dx11 (where is possible).

In the end, good example is all that Steam shovelware. Same graphics,same garbage broken games - UE5 40-50% more resource hungry in comparison with older UE4.:HideThePain:

this is why 8bit games and 16bit games are still special to me, they were extremely limited on what to do (also look at the original doom) so they actually had to put their ass into gear and not just "ehehe... unreal engine 5 goes brrrr" (and my god some people don't even give you graphics options, so if it runs badly by default, good luck!) of course there are always morons that just tell you to buy a new pc as if its something you can just do on a whim and doesn't cost a lot of money (specially to keep up with today's market)

This MOSTLY happens with triple A companies tho, indies TEND to be ""better"" but not always (steam has a lot of shovelware that runs on unreal or unity as you clearly know already)
but some people take it so damn far with unreal engine, like... here, i've seen VISUAL NOVELS on unreal engine, pissing visual novels, 2d sprites!

If you want to have a laugh put everything but texture quality on LOW (which is ironic considering its the damn textures that get put on minecraft levels), I have never seen a fucking unreal engine game look like THAT on low settings
it looks like a damn glitch or something, it doesn't look real
at least the character editor looked like a fucking mess
I always forget about the DX11 thingy since i assume by default UE5 doesn't have dx11 considering i always see a DX12 folder where the exe is (inside bin folder)



Modern games also need no fucking reason to be 100 gb's plus hell some are reaching 150 or even 200 lmao!

Also the fact that some games outright REQUIRE an ssd to run is asinine in it of itself, ssd's are usually way smaller than an HDD and more expensive, and with idiotic companies not compressing their games you end up with an almost full SSD with just like 2 or 3 games installed at most
I mean look at the Master chief Collection, you get so many games and the file size is STILL under today's games. Yeah sure the graphics aren't like "hyper realistic" so the size is gonna be smaller, but why are graphics even being pushed so damn hard to begin with?, then developers bitch that "it costs money to make games", yeah asshole maybe don't put 90% of the focus on graphics then, I assure you it will be far cheaper to make your games that way.

Didn't play RDR2 (im far more interested in the first one, but alas, the pc version is dogshit from what i've heard! the usual) because honestly that game looks so damn boring, everything takes an unnecessary amount of time, its OVER-animated, honestly cockstar's not been the same since gta V online got released, they shifted into a greedy soulless corporation, i have played GTA 4 and 5, they both have their ups and downs but gta 4's driving is definitely way more enjoyable than the flat "every car handles the same" gta V's style of handling, shooting was better on 4 too because those ragdolls are VERY entertaining.
and l4d2 i still play it to this day lol, not EVERY DAY but, regularly enough, i remember when i played the first one (sequel wasnt a thing yet) those were the golden days

or resident evil 4, or nfs most wanted (the latter 2 on ps2 and pc later on)



Developers nowadays (if we are talking about "mainstream stuff that is") take it safe because games cost a shitload to make now (THANKS NEEDLES 8K GRAPHICS!!) so they don't want to make unique things because if it bombs they lose a lot of money (its always about the money, companies are not your friend)
I stay away from online competitive games because they stress me out (too many nolifers and too much grind)
I remember playing shadow the colossus on ps2 also lol, sadly never got a pc port, never finished it either on ps2.
i have played almost every game from the PS2 era. It is easier not to list the ones that weren't good or were mediocre. But of course,everything started to fall apart after 2010s.

BEcause it is all fast food and easy money. The more you use the same oil for frying potatoes, the worse quality for your health gets. That's the best image analogy for gaming after 2010s.
And competitive games also has this and also have stupid EOMM and their addictions. All about the money, skins and porn skins. Not fitting to the game i mean porn skins, just for money. I see they target kids and clueless people who don't know what book title they are currently reading.
See how the world has become? It is like everyone is addicted to misery, brain can't see which is good or bad but whatever most gets, that emotion will get addicted. Essentially EOMM in a nutshell. Engagement optimized matchmaking, that algorithm has better optimization than the current games, it is so funny in hindsight

A lot of games allow options to turn that shit off.

It is, you CAN get them pregnant (just repat sex, the chance increases) and they get a belly and even comment on "what you did" (fun fact, the first girl in the steam room - if you gether pregnant you can have sex with her again later. If you don't, you can't, you'll get different dialogue options), but the rest isn't implemented.


That said, I forgot to add: I cna't see S*** because of the censor, but there better be no balls on the futas (or an option for it)

I recently took a look at clair obscur expedition 33 and the main thing i noticed that it eats up capacities like no tomorrow while im not exactly sure that graphics is really that good that it needs this much to run. It feels exactly as if i have already seen this level of great looks but several years ago, like nothing improved upon and infact seriously degraded in needing more processing power.

urgh don't even get the me started with the AI... i hate that shit so much, like I sometimes fiddle with stable difussion (I have a friend that sometimes gives me an online instance of his SD) so its not like i'm a stranger to AI art and I think I can recognize it pretty will unlike most people that just yell AI ART at everything like fucking clowns, but. AI stuff is only "good" (more like acceptable) when its a hobby, the second you start to profit from that or put it on "professional" things (games, software, patreon / fanbox. anything that costs money) that's when its a problem, its just LAZY.
Cant say too much about competitive games because i avoid those (and online games that arent pve / co op) like the plague that they are (to me that is lol), I already hate micro transactions and all of that shit (thank god for piracy, sadly no denuvo crackers) and the FOMO stuff, not playing those competitive things.

The difference between now and before 2010 is that lootboxes and all of that stuff werent like super popular neither was the "LAIVE SERVICEEE" model, i mean damn there used to be a time where "dlc" was called expansion packs and they were WAY more than just costume packs or p2w stuff, they had their own campaigns and shit, it was basically like getting.... an expansion on the game (GASP!)
I put the blame on the coomsumers for the state of "gaming" nowadays, yeah sure companies like EA are dogshit of course, but the fucking retards that buy their shit and support their business practices are the real problem to me. The practices wouldn't exist if they weren't successful to begin with.

Also another unreal engine (its ue4 this time) is seed of the dead 2, which does look slightly more unique because it has an anime style but that game is a mess everywhere else, he cant even get the fucking ironsights to line up properly (i dont care if you are indie, if you are making an fps game with ADS, get the basic rights for god sakes). But hey it sold like hotcakes (probably because of the anime / porn combo) even tho all he did was just copy paste l4d and make it worse(and added porn, mostly very rapey because japan hates consenting women) I honestly rather play back 4 blood than that thing, at least back for blood doesn't have awful janky animations and bad ADS, and hands clipping through the guns
that game also has a hub that uses a completely different artstyle from the rest of the game (its realistic 3d), because who cares about artistic cohesion, right?

Never heard of that game but considering the topic at hand I'm going to assume it runs on unreally badlyoptimized engeen 5 (it sure looks like one on the images)
And you have seen this "level of great looks several years ago" because most games using that engine look the same, as I've said previously is like people using that trash just shudder at the thought of art styles, most of them just go for the basic """realistic""" (dare I say... UNREAL) 3D look
This was more obvious and prevalent on UE4 but a lot of people use post processing effects and tools that they really don't know how to use or work with and that all eats resources as well, also not giving you proper graphical options even tho unreal engine already comes with its own graphical options menu I'm pretty sure (I assume so since sometimes you see games that have "Epic" as the max setting, so it has to come with the engine already) the .ini files usually found on appdata also kinda confirms this, because even if the game doesn't have a graphics menu those STILL work (sometimes they break the games tho)
really i just wish people stopped dickriding on graphics and went back to focusing on gameplay / artsyle / sound FIRST, but that wont happen.

poor coding can also (and definitely does) contribute to bad performance, the game can look like it came out of a nintendo 64 but if the coding is bad it will run bad (see yandere simulator, on unity)
but like, the graphics coming form UE4 to UE5 HAVE improved, but not like, a lot.To me its mostly just post processing to make it look fancier, its like putting gold foil on a piece of shit, yeah it looks better but its still shit and it smells bad

and not that im defending unreal engine (god knows i will never ever do that) but sadly this is one of the negatives of using a free engine made by someone else, the only way to get a more unique look and better running game is to make your own engine, but its not really something indie devs can do (that doesnt mean they should use unity / unreal and have a super basic and plain looking 3d "art style" tho)
like compare frosbyte to unreal engine (and by frostbyte i mean when its used in battlefield games ONLY), frostbyte, even the old frostbyte (battlefield 3) still looks better than any of these unreal engine games and runs better (again i'm ONLY talking about battlefield, because that engine is notoriously hard to work with, EA uses it on EVERYTHING)
