As far as combat tips go, the game tells you outright, you mainly gain experience from quests and sex scenes. You also gain experience from combat, but it's once per encounter type. So if you fought 2 Bandits and a Thug and won, any time you run into that same combination in the future, they provide no exp, only drops.
Anyway, tips. Markus has no infection penalty on transformation, and can easily carry you through the early fights. Transforming yourself is usually not a good idea until you have reliable ways to lower the infection quickly (more of a thing later). Aside from that, equipment actually makes a big difference. The swords you get by default suck ass, and once you replace them, life gets a lot easier. You can change equipment for any party member too, so don't forget to outfit them as well.
Items can be spammed as much as you want, so I recommend stocking up on potions, or just cheating them into your inventory if you don't feel like grinding. Also, one of the girls you unlock early on (Nijah), once her quest is progressed enough, will sell you powerful healing items for cheap.
You also get two more companions as you progress through the story, so that makes life easier the further you go.
Also, get both yourself and Markus 10 Strength and 8 Agility ASAP, that allows you to unlock the Flailing Strikes skill, which deals a ton of damage to all enemies, and applies an accuracy debuff on them. Best skill in the game so far.
