As a developer myself with plans to release pixel-art NSFW games through f95zone for free with hopes of support through patreon, I'm curious, what % of people on f95zone actually support NSFW game developers through patreon? Is the fear of the April Fools joke merge because people don't want to ever support developers through patreon, or is it that they simply want the option of having everything free on f95zone, etc?
As a person who frequents this site and supports game and modders, i honestly cant say the percentage of us who actually support devs. tbh if i had more money i would spend more than i currently do with projects i enjoy, but its not viable to support all projects. I would say grow your following first and go with a monthly scheduled of updates. Once you feel you have enough content to sell as a viable product, sell on sites like Itch.io. For both Patreon supporters and your Itch.io buyier, have something that is specifically sold to them (like a walk-through, a directors cut, or a walk-through mod that that goes over easily missed moments or interactions). It may end up pirated but the goal is to get people who realllly like your project to want to support it before its thrown up on sites like f95. These tend to be the things that actually get me to support a project. To be fair I also have a quarterly rotation where i support a project for about 3 to 4 months and move to a different one that i want to support. only a few i support year round. It becomes easier for me to do this with projects like that tend to have longer development times.
For example
games i always buy from Itch.io but don't typically support on patreon/SubscribeStar
Anything from Siren's Domain, Andrealphus, EmperoXXX and CataclyZm but i buy thier whole packages.
Games i buy off Itch.io and routenly support at least 2-4 months out of the year
Mythic Manor, Aurelia, FEYADA, PriceForFreedom. Usually in or around thier release dates.
Games creators I support on Patreon/SubscribeStar for 3-4 months if possable
DarkCookie, Runey, Mity, The INN, and Lord Arioch. Usually around thier release months
All year round support
Bad kitty games and Dinaki (If i have the money). I had more but many have dropped thier projects and thus i stopped support at the time of my choosing.
Basicly I make a budget based on how much I have to spare for games. it fluctuates month to month though
I know this is a bit off topic from the joke post but if it give some idea of the spending habits of a user and helps plan out a projects, though just know that isn't always the case for everyone and i could be an outlier, just know that F95 is a resource of getting the project off the ground. The ones who support projects are often the ones that don't bitch and moan about how your paywalling content. Never feel ashamed of how you choose to monitize your project or get people to find your patreon/subscribestar, so long as it isn't preditory or milking the audience. Also it really helps to do regular updates to show that the project is alive. most projects i've dropped are usually due to not knowing if the project is alive or if the dev is even able to continue with the project.
With how off topic this has become we probaly should move this to a different discussion.
