While I agree with the majority of your statements I wouldn't deign to make assumptions on the last part.
Still games that require more than clicking the mouse and haveing an actually good story seem rare... well developer also follow the mainstream to maximize profit so there might be indeed a conjunction.
There is a reason why a lot of people on this website hate RPGM games.
They don't hate it because of the graphics or story or anything like that, they hate it because they have to put in some effort.
Look at the amount of Ports that have been requested in the last year (RPGM to Ren'py).
Only so they don't have to walk, fight or puzzle.... only so they can hold down the CTRL button to skip the dialogue and see the good stuff.
An amazing game like this will never get the amount of attention that a game as Corruption or Dreams of desire has....
Not because one is better than the other...no... Just because one i easy and the other requires effort.
As for my second argument.
I agree with the point that it's probably not the sole reason why the quality of most games are just crap, there are multiple reasons for that (Patreon, skill and financial options for example).
But there is a reason why so many games the last year have been Ren'py VN's with incest that let's you have the "good stuff" in minutes
Large part of the community just wants a "quick fix".
Maybe not the active community, but 1.3 million members....I would guarantee that at least 1.2 million of those are just looking for that quick fix.
