Granted, many devs have some free public version of their games, but still many prefer to test a game before being disappointed by another round of lazy R18 slop.
So pirate site do their part, but maybe not to the extend as itch (if there is a free version) does.

True, I've done that with actual games even. Now that optimization is generally shit and "gameplay" is mostly staged "in game engine" footage, it's useful to make sure the game is actually good and runs well. Consoles don't have much of those issues, but on PC getting to try the game is fucking key now so you don't have to wait 5 months for those three patches that make the game playable.

A good game will sell regardless though. I've bought games after finishing the pirated version due to respect and appreciation for whoever developed it. It's not different with adult games, especially since there are so many that go on forever and add nothing, like mister over here lol.

Abe is just mad/afraid people get to see the game is turning into shit here and then stop paying him

He's been promoting his game on itch.io and most likely a lot of other legal sites, too.
Those sites even reach a far bigger audience.

And that's where devs like him go fishing (or better "whaling").
They lure them with false promises and big mouths into patreon for a monthly subscription.

And you have no idea, how careless a lot of other people are with their money.

I can give proof, that he's making at least 3500$ from patreon alone now (other subscriptions and sales not included).

The amount of attention, he's getting from here, is absolutely not significant.

Well, we should be grateful to those heroes who give us the opportunity to try and understand whether it's worth supporting the developers or not, if the developers take the game seriously, then there will be support from here, and if he earns through long waits, then there is zero point in supporting him.
