That is correct. Protection only applies to performers. You could apply the use of condoms though, that should include your girlfriend, if I am not mistaken.

Takes about 2-3 in game months for her to notice it and then announce it to you.
Edit : Some staff members also have birth control enabled at the start.
If your staff member gf doesn't get pregnant after a few months she's probably on it.
