I remember trying this game a few years ago with female protag and iirc it was much more limited in what you can do compared to male protag, is this still the case? How much stuff changes now depending on if you play with male or female protag overall? Thanks.

Do a search in this thread and everything is being answered. The shortest answer to all of it is: pretty much unchanged.
I wouldn't say it's much more limited in what you can do compared to male protag.
You can't shoot Hidden Scenes as a female, but that's about it.
Instead you can shoot solo scenes for free and you can work at the strip club, which is a big plus in the early stage of the game.
Then there's the missing Twins-Story, you just buy the Beauty Center.
What else is limited?
There's probably more bugs when you play a female mc though, haven't played her yet in 94dev3.
