This game looks lovely in concept but I keep getting gated by how grindy and nightmarish the earlygame is. Are there actually battlefuck mechanics in this game? I've barely seen any combat and I'm like 3 hours in.

I can see that I'm not the only one and that playing this game blind without a guide is downright agonizing. Is there really no decent, up-to-date guide?
there are battlefuck mechanics, but off the top of my head, you can reliably have it with bandits that only sometimes pop up on the world map and harass a kingdom.

your choices of guides are searching this thread (have fun with that), the discord server (even worse), one guide on steam that hasn't been updated in two years, a fandom wiki that's only accessible from the internet archive (outdated as a result), and a miraheze wiki that's got more red links than there are red blood cells in your body.

There are community-made guides, but generally you're going in pretty blind, plus some events only appear during certain seasons.
My recommendation is to talk to literally everyone; they'll give you clues about certain things.

Thought so. Damn.

Yeah, I've been trying to do this and it's been slightly helpful, but not by much and the amount of repeat pointless dialogue is just too much.
For example, I still have no actual clue how to find the Insect Kingdom. I know it's in the northern part of the map, but never managed to come across it or come across an NPC that hinted at where it was.

Insect Kingdom can be accessed 2 ways. 1. Human Reign falls to Slime Reign early in the game. Insects will rise in middle of north map. 2. In the south there is an island to the east that can only be accessed by flying. On that island there is a dungeon where in the north there is a crater. Jump in the crater and hit the north wall with a blunt weapon to break it open and voila you have access to the kingdom below where insect and 2 other kingdoms are.

Is there some trick to not making the game be mostly off-screen in the bottom-right corner? I can't be the only one who has this issue.

The first one you often find out by accident which is fine. The second, not at once but you get a string of gentle hints that will eventually lead you to explore these areas and eventually these 'secrets,' and by secrets I mean very poorly hidden points of interest that are clearly points of interest.

But I dunno, maybe some people won't go through the trouble of getting flight, see an island over yonder, decide nah they don't want to fly there and see what it is, and definitely not explore it fully.

From my experience most people stumble onto insect kingdom and are ironically disappointed it's just a kingdom, and one with a softblock at that unless they changed it.

Because you sure as heck ain't trudging back there anytime soon to do normal kingdom stuff.

one last thing, "getting flight" means getting a party member with a flight trait? like a fairy, which seem the most accessible

Yes, or you can spam farming gears at the golem graveyard in the golem reign then take them to an NPC in the mouse reign (clockwork city dividing the north and south halfs of the map). The mouse engineer sells accessories that give the MC abilities/immunities races naturally have like flight. IMO that's probably the easiest way, it doesn't take long to farm the gears, or at least it didn't.

Plus you can easily farm the golems there for xp too.

You can also try and get lucky with the dragon egg at harvest reign (the human one right above golem reign they always fighting, enter the city then head out to the field area at the right), sometimes there's a dragon egg up on a watch/water tower thingy, you can hatch that and use that instead.

If you're going to the insect kingdom, I'd bring stuff immune to poison or poison cures and a decent amount of healing items if I recall correctly, there's like some dumb poison swamp before it or something.

One of the dragon princesses is also sleeping somewhere there too.

What do you mean "for NPC's at least"?
I don't know either, but my guess is it's a reference to

Pretty sure by "NPCs" he just meant the random ones you run into in the wild. There might be a few other dubious cases I might have forgotten but outside of the NPC stuff which can be hard to tell sometimes, the rest are explicit characters so it's not random .
