Now, I'm going to preface my review with a personal comment: this is one of my favorite adult games. Ever. I tend to shy away from RPG Maker games, but I fell in love with this game so fast. I think I'd be extremely hard pressed to actually rate all the adult games I've ever played, but I'm certain that this would be in my top five, if not my top three.
With that being said.
This game does have faults, and I recognize that it's very possible for those faults to push other people away. I'm aware of them, and that's why I'm giving it four stars rather than five despite my personal feelings. I'll go more in depth later.
First off: the positives. The art is very good, and while the artstyle is somewhat generic, the sheer number of variations in the artwork from the various statuses and conditions kept me from ever getting bored of it. The music is all royalty free, so you may have heard some of the songs before, but they were very well chosen. I'm especially a fan of the final boss theme, Numina- it fits the fight very well. The writing is... well, the machine translation isn't very good, and I'll go into it later, but the characters were likable. I really liked the interactions between the player character, Amethyst, and the antagonist, Cloudy. How Cloudy is horny on main for Amethyst 24/7, while Amethyst sees her as more of a nuisance than anything.
Now, the horny part of the game. A lot of RPG games suffer from "lose to win" type gameplay, where you get the porn scenes from losing battles. And while you do get scenes and status conditions for losing battles, the main lewdness comes from simply playing the game. Instead of losing HP directly, your pleasure will go up whenever you're attacked, and when you reach full pleasure, you climax and then take damage. Each enemy uses exclusively erotic attacks, including generic gropes, ear whispers (this game really like focusing on her ears), magic spells, being drenched with aphrodisiacs, and in one case being interrogated on what your weak points are. Refusing to say results in the attack lasting longer and you taking more pleasure, while giving in and revealing your weaknesses makes the attack end but makes all enemies in the area stronger from then on. The element of humiliation from that- making Amethyst confess what made her feel good- was sheer gold.
Oh, right. Humiliation. I suppose I should get into that now.
See, you might've noticed that among the erotic attacks listed, "getting dicked down good and hard" wasn't one of them. That wasn't a mistake. There is no penetrative sex in the entire game. At no point does a penis enter Amethyst's vagina, or anywhere in her body. This girl, despite being molested hundreds of times, is a pure blooded virgin. The closest thing would be a dildo that the Fairy enemies insert into her in their defeat scene, and even that is somewhat overshadowed by the various other toys they're using on her. This is potentially a major negative for some people, so I felt it would be a good idea to mention it. Personally, I was fine with it, but I'm a bit of an outlier. I'm needlessly enraptured by foreplay, and the game is essentially just all foreplay and humiliation being taken to the next level. The closest thing to actual sex is the lesbian defeat scene for the final boss. I'm not saying the other scenes aren't enticing in their own way, just that you shouldn't expect more than groping and humiliation.
When you actually do lose battles, you get defeat scenes. These are prewritten, rather than generated and adaptable like the battles are. So while you won't get any extra enjoyment from viewing the same scene twice, the average defeat scene is better than the average battle due to the guaranteed flow of action and dialogue. Additionally, each enemy has a special bad state that they give upon viewing their defeat scene. A bad state is essentially a permanent status condition that can only be removed through special means, and they usually have to do with the enemy you lost to. For example, the slime girl's bad state makes your body leak magic whenever you climax (you lose MP when you climax), and the squid enemy's bad state makes your body drenched in aphrodisiac that gives you pleasure whenever your clothes rub against you (you gain pleasure whenever you attack). None of them are mutually exclusive, with the exception of the Crest of Perversion states. But they're just direct upgrades of one another, so it's not a big deal. Each bad state makes battles slightly different, and slightly harder. Some of them you'll want to get rid of because they make battles more annoying (I hate the Nipple Rings so goddamn much), and some you can keep because they barely make an impact on gameplay but improve the experience (pro tip, lose to the Takt Master for Lesbian Desires, it's great).
But alas, not all is pleasant in wonderland, for now it's time to discuss the negatives. Asides from the possible subjective one above. First off, the machine translation can be painful at times. I'm talking characters starting sentences with "however" for no reason. I'm talking tons of ellipses in the dialogue when Amethyst is being molested. It's not the worst, since it's definitely readable, but nowhere near ideal. From what I understand, a translation might be currently in the works by someone here, so this could eventually be a moot point, but as of November 14th 2020, it's an issue. (Also, if the new translation changes Cloudy's name to Claudia or Clodia, I'll be a little sad. Cloudy's such a fitting and fun name for her. Claudia's what you call someone's rich aunt.)
Another negative is that the game can be fairly grindy. It's not like you need to grind your level up to beat the game or anything- you start at level 31 and barely level up from that, and I really didn't notice any significant changes from levelling up. It's just that the game can become very tedious if you have a bunch of bad states, which of course you're going to have if you want to see all the content. The Shadow Frame has one of my favorite defeat scenes in the game, but the Tentacle Clothing bad state it gives makes battles last so much longer. And going out of your way to cure them takes time that you might not want to spend. My advice is to play on Stress Free mode- yeah, it's "easy mode," but if you get a bad state more than once you can instantly get rid of it for free after the first time. Makes the game so much more tolerable. Also, if you want any chance at beating the bosses without it taking ten minutes, you gotta go around the area and do a bunch of things to deactivate traps that would've made the bosses harder.
Overall, though, despite those faults I had an amazing time. It's one of very few adult games that I found myself daydreaming about. Not just about the porn, but the characters and the world. I ended up crafting a concept for a fix-it fic AU that resulted in a happy ending for everyone while I was at work. I've only ever done something like that for one other game on this site. If you're more fond of direct, hardcore sex, this won't scratch your itch. But if you're fine with all the little bits in between, go right ahead.
(And one final note: I purchased a Japanese copy of the game on dlsite to support the developer. A pirate's life is evidently not for me.)
