At the start of the game, MC seems to be interested in dating: He can become more official with V, flirt with his students, meets his new neigbor for the first time in a private, vulnerable position, gets the interest of a spy. The intent is clear: MC is done mourning his divorce and is willing to look for a new partner in his life.
But then Lily happens and going after any women who isn't with Lily is irresponsible and against common sense priorities. You fuck around when you have the freedom, you don't fuck around while you gather money for your daughters treatment. And even lustful ruthless MC isn't portrayed as someone who would put Lily under the bus for pussy, even asshole MC cares for Lily above everything.
Sure, he doesn't need to get together with Allison, but he must work with her together.

There is Maggie, we have seen how caring she is for a child she never met. She understands the importance of parents. She is all around lovely person. Or we can go for more neutral parties, such as Jasmine. She is somewhat neutral on Lily's case but she shows understanding to MC and tries to make MC life easier for him to help Lily by convincing her gramps. Even spy could be a better option if MC can tame her. Think about it, she can teach everything she know to Lily. On the other hand, V basically said to MC fuck your problems, either you gonna focus on me or I am gonna guilt trip you to the death. I'll create a fucking mess while you try to fix the situation. I am gonna throw hissy fit if you don't listen to me. At the end, she is the worst choice. Unless you had a thing for Lady Tremaine, you would not choose V as a stepmother.
