Why the files are in .webp format ? why not in .jpg or something else....

jpg would be at least 5x larger in size with no increase in quality. At about 8x the size of webp you may see a quality increase in some of the images.

It's a 4MB webp codec download from google and 95% of programs including Windows can read them like any other image file. Guess I'm not seeing the up-side to jpg?
