Played: Reboot Love 1 More Time [v0.9.9] [Reboot Love] / Minor updates for v0.9.95
Rating:3.5/5 (Rounded up to 4) 3.9/5 (Appreciate the small update for v0.9.95)
Quick Summary: You play a generally good-natured failure of a high-school student with a superhero secret identity. There are three main girls that you can have relations (sex) with and a few support characters but development on all of them falls short (Well this is Part 1 apparently). While the game has some choice it is mostly between failure or success with stat check fights sprinkled in. Failure may result in death resulting in you ‘rebooting’ with extra stats depending on previous run. Continue until you reach true end. As far as I can tell at least one reboot is required to get true end (Most likely you’ll need more as I did).
Tip: Configure your Renpy skip choices (I usually have after choices selected but not unseen). You don’t want to waste time rereading text you have already seen. You’ll be doing a lot of skipping in this game even if you read everything once.
Pros:
-Female models were nice to look at
-Girl fight club has some nice eye candy.
-I did enjoy the running gag with the superhero name (Perhaps not super original but I liked it).
-Timeline on phone to see what events you have succeeded or failed at for a playthrough.
-Losing fights is not always a complete failure (Some minor scenes)
-MC name is now customizable (v0.9.95)
Neutral:
-Fight mechanics themselves are straight forward and simple. It is mostly a stat check. If you are struggling it might just be time to lose and get the extra stats from the reboot. Trying to power through with save/load and RNG is often a waste of time. Max stats made fights easy.
-English starts off a bit rough and some words may be a little difficult to decipher (especially for nonnative speakers as translators will probably not work due to misspellings). It does improve as the game progresses. It is still understandable for the most part.
-Overall story could have been a bit better (Don’t expect much explanation of anything) but I guess this may be covered in Part 2.
-Girls are a bit generic in the personality department. Not enough time to develop them. Only student age love interests.
Cons:
-MC is not nameable (Changed in v0.9.95)
-For a game about rebooting there isn’t really different ways to proceed with a new start that are meaningful (A few very small extra scenes). You are just rebooting until you win. Game is far more linear than I thought it would be.
-I feel teased that I could not pursue some characters in this game (Like the Aunt).
-School setting with no hot teachers!?!?!?
Random Thoughts:
This game feels like (and probably is) more of a proof of concept and someone cutting their teeth on Renpy and rendering. This is not a bad thing necessarily (It is good to set limits). I liked the concept of the game on paper. However, in the end we get a mostly linear game and few characters to pursue. I expected to be able to make some whacky choices on the reboots but that is not the case.
Another problem is that in the end there is only one real path to ‘beat’ part 1. However, you don’t get a lot of choice in how you approach that. Some characters will treat you like a toy and you don’t have much choice in that. The girl with rape fantasies? I hope you enjoy playing along with that too. In my case I’m flexible and can enjoy this to a degree (Though I really wanted to be more dominate in the cousin’s case), but this may drive some players up the wall.
I can’t say for certain, but the creator may have had bigger plans for Part 1 but learned a lot during the development and realized rather than start from scratch to wrap things up and do Part 2 (There are even a couple scenes on the phone that are labeled as future content that I could not access). I have not played Part 2 but based on Part 1 I believe the creator learned a lot and will probably be able to deliver a better experience.
In conclusion I was a bit disappointed. However, I do acknowledge that this part 1 raps up in a complete, though not satisfactory, experience. I felt that everything was competently put together hence me rounding it up to 4 stars. I do have high hopes for part 2 which I hope to give a shot at some point.
