Short version is that Marvel couldn't use any mutants in their movies because Fox had the rights to them, so the X-Men as a whole were off limits. But, due to some loophole or another, they could use any mutants that had been Avengers, as long as they didn't say they were mutants. And if Lorna is a.k.a. Polaris? I'm cool with this, though that's probably because I haven't seen how she's looked as a character in years (not counting the live action show). As I seem to recall her character design being that of a naked lady who's naughty bits were covered by the green swirlies of her powers (or visually hinting at this), she's likely to get my vote.
While you're not wrong, I not sure how you are on the dates of everything. Because that "while back" was May 2015 (the release date of Uncanny Avengers (vol 2) #4, which published the retcon.) That's a month after the premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron. While that's not their debut in the MCU, it's where their backgrounds were definitely shown to be "not mutant" (I think the post-credits before that was more of a visual to get the comic geeks to gush.) So yeah, it's hard to pass that off as being unrelated.
True, but I guess my point was this was a bullshit retcon. While "bullshit retcon" might be considered a redundant term, I'd say it applies when it stems from corporate chicanery as opposed to the usual hack writing.

Oh, no, I still enjoy comics. I just find my time is now better served finding titles to read from the 90s & earlier than to try and sort through what's recent.
