Well, in a trainer game you have to train girls (raise some stats) to do other things with them, this kind of game doesn't necessarily need a sandbox to work.

A sandbox is a description of an environment in which you can move freely and do the things that are offered to you (depending on the game). I played Star Wars Galaxies back in the day, and it was probably one of the best sandbox games I've ever played.
