Unity is the better option but needs some experience in coding and some effort put into it. It would probably end up better but take a lot longer as others have said.You suggest Ren'py? Too late for it now but i wonder your answer.
I mean he could just release a piece of trash like all the Unity games on Steam that look ugly and run terribly, but he may as well stick to his current engine if he does that
