What they really should do is what all games on Patreon are doing. Keep the mother as a potential love interest but change her name to landlady or something like that. Then either let the player name her whatever they want, allowing you to call her Mom or otherwise quietly release an incest patch to rename her and return her dialogue.

I really liked the art when I first heard of it, but then after playing the game, which was a Visual Novel in a RPG Maker MV game, I lost interest. Sad, because with the right decisions the dev could have clearly had more success. Now he also removed the most interesting character from the game. What an idiot.
