It does feel like a lot of new AVN devs take on too much too soon in their first or second projects. Big choice driven VNs with tons of characters are an ever increasing ton of work in every department as well as a huge 3-5+yr time commitment. It's a lot, especially if you still have a full time job. Big risk.As I said, for my first project, I like to keep things simple and straightforward for myself. Learn, gain experience before delving into choices and different paths that are player-driven. I'd rather be able to put out updates every month than once or twice a year or what happens to most AVN's... Abandoned.
Making a few smaller games with limited choice, building experience and a support base confident you'll finish games before moving on to a big project witha lot of variables to manage feels a lot smarter.
