We don't know when the game takes place but it's safe to assume that it is the same time as when the game started being released aka 2020 but an alternative one without COVID-related stuff. That would mean Frank was born in 1981 and was 18 in 1997. So yeah. Kinda weird. But he was also super weirded out by a digital camera in a flashback and those became a regular thing around 1990 so maybe we are looking at the timeline wrong. Or the dev just made a mistake. It happens
According to the most recent update, we are up to Final Fantasy 16 in Single Again world. So the game takes place after June 2023 at least, and since it's set in April, that means it's at least 2024. But then again, there are tons of anachronisms in this game. This game doesn't really make sense in any time period.

This is such a great game. I really enjoy it, despite the blue balls you often get. Cannot wait from the newest update, nonetheless...

Only sad part: Vetoes on Abby. I really thought the MC would be balls deep inside her by now. They hint it everywhere, and then the characters all shoot down the Abby sexual relationship with the MC, including the dumbass MC himself... why no sexy Abby times? It's already boring fapping to just Lil and Becky. We don't even get any Mei action yet either. See the cause of blue balls here?

I vote (or beg?) that the MC be inside Abby (and Mei) by the next update or two. Wadya think?
well first off i am pretty sure mei is going to get it soon whit the current build up perhaps during the mentioned vacation

as for abby i think it will happen eventually, of course if you choose that path as the player
lily will try to put a stop to it whit the veto thing indeed but i am pretty sure when abby does find out the current relationship that is going she will attempt to join and abby has a good handle on lily getting her to do things she doesn't want or convince her

Considering, if I don't remember wrong, Frank had a tv, some kind of computer/console in his bedroom during his teen years and played games it's highly unlikely that his upbringing would be the reason why he's so out of tech.

I can only assume that getting married early and having to take care of a child with unsteady income might have made him drop everything tech related and he has not kept up in any way.

The streamer thing I can understand though. If you're not watching streamers or other content creators at all it's not surprising that you don't know how successful they can be.

I've been around computers since 1986 my first Computer was an IBM 8088. I still have trouble with all this stuff. I've stayed away from social media, unlike Frank I did it on purpose. Frank too may have followed that path as well making his ignorance deliberate.

Honestly, I think it well might have been Shannon. I get the feeling she would've been more like Bobby Bouchet's mom for that type of stuff.

Everyone is talking about Frank's technological incompetency as if it is surprising in light of his demonstrated general incompetence. All jokes aside, Frank's most endearing (and frustrating) trait is his general state of oblivious benevolent subsistence. He seems to have walked through most of his married life not realizing that his wife doesn't want to fuck him and his daughters do. It isn't shocking that he doesn't exactly have his finger on the pulse of the most recent trends in the online streaming community.

As for what year it takes place, I actually just compared the in game calendar to ours, and it seems to match with 2023. April 22 was on a Saturday this year, just like in the game. And while that's a couple months before Final Fantasy 16 came out, it was being heavily promoted already, so it makes sense for Mei to say we are up to 16. So I'm pretty sure it is set this year. Makes the most sense anyway.

You could be right, but the game was first published three years ago, so it could be 2017 too, which was six months after FF15 came out and the dev could have just thrown FF16 in there for fan service. Or it could be alt reality and date/day relationship doesn't apply to real world time.

The game is set in Canada sometime after weed became legal. That happened in 2018. So it can't be 2017. 2023 makes more sense. Although an alt reality would explain the other anachronisms. But if we ignore the bio that says Beth and Nessa met in university before same sex marriage was legal, and we ignore Frank's teenage bedroom, then 2023 seems to match pretty well.

So you basically just threw your own wrench into the timeline.

You want to ignore some cannon background info and insist the day/date matches real-world year 2023, despite the fact that if the year was 2017, which would also fit the day/date info, then the background information in question would actually fit perfectly into the narrative? That seems a much more relevant point to focus on than the throw-away line about FF16. The weed thing is much more relevant, but it's as strong an argument as the legalization of same-sex marriage, so that's an interesting conundrum.

Still, all this is just fodder to justify or counter the idea of a single individual growing up without becoming internet savvy in the 21st century, something that is way more realistic than many F95Zone users can probably appreciate.

YouTube, which is pretty much the catalyst for how we view the internet today, was "founded" in 2005, which, if it is 2023, would be a year after Abby was born.

We saw how insecure and focused on financial problems Frank already was before that, and every indication is that he's never really become internet savvy. He knows enough to operate his website, search for houses up for sale on the internet and, if he puts his mind to it, re-learn enough photoshop to make a new background image and replace the one on his home page.

I know real people -- both in their late 30s and early 40s -- who would fit that description. Of the people I know who do, at least two of them would fall into Frank's level of understanding internet culture and monetization opportunities.

So the idea of one socially-awkward person -- living his life with the idea that he has to provide for his family first, never really becoming internet savvy -- is pretty easy for me to believe.

So whether the game takes place in 2023, 2017, or some alt-world that doesn't match the real-world calendar is really irrelevant to the entire argument.

One of the best lines in "Men in Black" is when Tommy Lee Jones's K is explaining to Will Smith's Jay why aliens have to be kept secret from the public:

A Person is Smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.

This is true in reverse as well. "People" know how the internet works, know about pop culture, and know what's happening in the bubble of the groups they interact with. A Person knows what they know.

I think - personally - this is a similar situation to the "Becky fatherhood timeline" discussion, when players may be giving it more thought than devs. Especially with references to pop cultural things (like a game release or current fad, I also include stuff like weed legalization here although strictly it isn't) devs may be tempted to throw that in to give a connection to our world. However, in game we have had a few weeks passing when the real world moves on by years, and while we all may remember this or that thing happening in the last five years, without research timelines may quickly get messed up.

The whole issue underlying this conversation is the dichotomy between time passing in-story and the real world time taken to develop the game. There will always be issues with the timeline because as development continues things will get added to either the script or backgrounds or purposes of, for example, refering to real world events or as a joke/easter egg that would create an anachronistic issue with the timeline. One would hope that as the story reaches completion a bit of tightening up and smoothing of these elements will be carried out.

Seriously...who cares? Take a deep breath people.
Well, you may not. I find stuff like that interesting - not necessarily helpful as such but interesting at least.

Also, sometimes when you see inconsistencies or similar problems, you cannot actively ignore them, they just bug you. Yes, even in a porn game which I do not play for historically or otherwise correct stuff. Who is bugged by what may differ. But just imagine that your home town would be the setting of a game like this, and they got it totally wrong - wrong culture, wrong country, wrong whatever. You'd a least take a step back I guess.

I wrote a whole thesis (not really) about why, according to the stated information in game, the MC spent 8 years in high school, and three of them as a senior. It's still my favorite AVN.

The first digital cameras very well may have been released but I certainly don't recall them becoming widely available to the masses as opposed to a luxury item that only the wealthy could afford until the early 2000's at least. In the UK anyway. I was born in 1981 and I can honestly proclaim a befuddlement over how some people can make so much money over social media and other things, though I will admit that there was a period of time where I had limited access to the internet myself due to limitations of infrastructure whilst I was serving in the military of my home country, which kind of coincided with the era of the early rise of the social media companies, as well as a disbelief as to how grubby and commercial the internet has become from the sort of innocent open source nirvana I kind of remember it being before the likes of Amazon, YouTube, Google and Facebook among others started to dominate. I'm not saying you're wrong about the timeline or the possibility of the dev making a mistake but for things such as technology progression a lot depends on socioeconomic position, country of residence and the like as to whether things are widely available or not and as such our perceptions are not always the same
I Joined the RN is 1996 was in for 12 years, you're absolutely right about limited internet when deployed, but I got into MMO's in 2000 (Everquest) so i've been deep in the online world for coming up of 25 years now.

No, I'm already bored of that conversation. I was just trying my best to place this game in our timeline for fun not to try to win any argument. As I already said, it's impossible to place the game in our timeline if we accept everything in this game at face value. But Beth and Nessa meeting in college before same sex marriage was legal was only referenced in the bio and not in game, so it's easier to dismiss. The stuff in Frank's teenage bedroom is just background and never directly referenced in dialogue, so I can overlook that too. Plus those are the two most glaring anachronisms, since even if this game is set in 2020 when the game first started, both of those were impossible. So I chose those two things to ignore and the game can be set in 2023. It's just a fun exercise, nothing more. I'm not actually annoyed at the game for having inconsistencies or for Frank being computer illiterate. I just like to poke fun at things and it can be fun to try to make sense of it.

I joined the USN in 1992, got out in 1996. At my first command, the only computer I got to work with was a Tandy from 1976. My PO said the only thing he knew was that the F2 key meant save, so he hit it a lot. It didn't do shit since there was no software other than the OS. We did find software for it, and there was an office type suite for word processing and spreadsheets, but we had to keep everything logged on paper so using the computer was pointless. Shortly after I got to my second command, my department was a allotted Windows 95 PC's, one for each division. I was in deck department. Since we still had to keep everything logged on paper, the only thing those computers were good for was playing Doom. Internet was starting to come up in the world at that time, but for us out at sea if you asked about it the most common response was "Internet? What's that? Do you need to go to medical? I told you that girl looked sketchy."
