I figured it out. You see, I was very low on health and mana, so what I did was travel back to the church to heal without opening the gate.
So now I beat the bastard a second time, and instead went right for the gate, which worked.
Can I be a honourable gigachad, since I beat his ass twice now?
It takes a lot of aggression, but familiarity with the attack timings can allow you to do this.

The same principle applies with other bosses as well, where the visual effects of the attack are longer than the actual attack frames.
Other tricks for bossfighting include using owl glide to extend air timing so you can get a second magic slash off (useful for the secret boss).
