I've been avoiding the thread because it's always toxic, but I vaguely remember something along the lines of the entire game being ported to Renpy since Unity is getting to be increasingly nightmarish. Is that correct and what you all have been working on?
That is correct, but it’s taking a bit, so there will be another unity update early this year that will incorporate the Gotham and thymascara updates.

Themy stand alone update just came out

Another confusing decision made by the team, I saw that the patreon comments weren't that happy about one last unity update, in my opinion this decision seems like to appease both people here and some confused patreons that the main game is still being updated however I think it would be best if instead of the last unity update they'd just concentrate on finishing the ren'py conversion.

We rarely communicated on this thread from 2018-2024. In fact I only have 503 total comments (5's of hundreds), and quite a few of those are in other various threads. So lets not embellish, there might be a few REASONs why we were late. But excuses is a stretch.



This is a lie. We created the delivery window one time over 10 years. The update speed over the last 10 years has been extremely consistent. Again your feelings don't equate to anything provide evidence

I cannot draw but i am programmer with almost 20 years of experience, i could easily write whole game engine for it that would work on linux/mac/android/windows in less than 6 months from scratch, using available games engine its <1 month for basic logic and another month to port content.
Heck i wouldn't even need complex engine i would just do simple web application or just use renpy/unity. I won't do that because no one will pay me for it like they pay you and i will not steal you drawings to do that.

Okay, good, hopefully the work will be easier on Renpy and the schedule can be more reliable. Maybe even allow for more variety.

We have already discussed this in detail. We started rebuilding SU in early 2021 with Henshin a python programmer. We released SU:Android a 1:1 SU rebuild in ren'py June 2023. This was cell complete and lacked any events. Two years full-time with one programmer. If you pay FMV wage you're looking north of $100k usd easily. If you're a crook and like to rip people off I'm sure you can wrangle a sucker for about $50k usd total. But then you might have a bunch of set backs.

As for art you have no clue how long something takes. But we have many streams of art, so you can easily find out. A simple portrait on stream runs 2.5hrs starting from line work. You will need to add roughly .5hrs for lining, and roughly 1hr for sketching. That is roughly 4hrs per portrait. A complex scene runs roughly 6-8 hrs for a single character, and for multiple characters about 12-16hrs. Artist have a physical limit to art and you're lucky if you get 30+ productive hours out of them, they need to protect from carpel tunnel. So for a single SU update that runs roughly 35-40 scenes if you were to pay a shit artist, or lesser known about $150 for a portrait which works out to be about $37.50/hr. You will probably run into problems with consistency and reliability. But this artist in a year could do 1560 hrs of straight work no holidays or breaks. That will run you roughly $58,500 per year or $117,000 for two years.

So now we add the two. 120k (programmer) + 120k (artist) and it would cost you roughly $250k dollars to rebuild SU to cell complete in two years without writing, or backgrounds, or other operating costs you may need. With backgrounds and writing you're well over $325k paying fair market value wages.

You may think we produce far from enough, but that is your opinion. 2025 was a massive success for us as far as content goes.

BTW why are the gotham and sycraia thing a different game and not more content for the main game ?
The initial idea came from "Jimwalrus" of this thread. He stated SU was just a bunch of small gems mashed up. That go us thinking of how we could transition away from Unity, get the game in more peoples hands (Android, Web, etc). So there were several problems that had came to light mid 2023.

1) Android ram ceiling limit. We believe this is the reason Summertime Saga had to rebuild as well. After 1Gb Ren'py Android bricks. Our Android project instantly hit 1Gb after 1 update.
2)Unity bug testing and environment wasn't suitable for mutliple people. Meaning the way SR7 works in Unity doesn't permit others to contribute.
3)We felt Newgrounds is under utilized (proven correct with latest porn game bans)
4)Mega was becoming a problem for people (we were losing supporters because of it)

So we took JimWalrus's statement and thought be separating the events we could solve all the above issues. Which we did on the first build. However there was a new issue:

1)SU being sandbox meant players created a narrative of their own. Without that narrative the events felt flat and uninteresting.

So when we announced Unity's step back and a focus on stand alones we received enough backlash and lost support we had to have emergency meetings around what to do. Another statement from F95 (I can't remember who) asked "I wonder how much work it would take to bring the Android to PC". It was a question we hadn't asked in 3 years tbh. So we asked the question, and it's a long time. So a new problem came up.

1)How can we get the complete"Main game" (btw I hate that term) back but in Ren'py.

The solution is to get the Android build into a usable state. Quality will be all over the place, but we will have what players want and what we do. How do we get there, well we will update Unity one more time to give us needed months to figure out a point when we can switch later this year.

That is the whole timeline. Themy and Gotham are not different games, they are just events in Ren'py.

It's already easy to mod, the problem lies with the community. Scroll up and see how many people think A) we're shit, and B) we lie about the difficulty. Then go see who has built a mod of SU... Mendoza is the only person and his project is dead pretty much after 3 years.

The problem is the community here (F95) surrounding SU. Everyone who wants to make a mod, does so because of either A or B, and not a genuine want to make a fun side story. They dive in all excited, get the handful of haters to give them some likes to make them feel good, and they come to the crushing realization that doing what we do isn't so easy. Eventually the team dies, and you all go back to A and B complaints.

When we released the Android build in 2023 this very thread had people saying they would convert it to PC and be playable in seconds. That was 3 years ago and it hasn't happened.

If you want to mod go for it, but keep the scope very very small. If you think we don't get shit done in 3 months, then you're going to fail. Our 3 month output would be a community teams year +. I'm not saying that out of spite, that is from a decade of watching the community say something is simple and not producing a single item.

As well if you think about using fan artists think again. Many of those who do the edits take more time to edit the art than SR7 does to draw it. And you can add more time if you need something specific.

So are the two standalone event games going to be added into the main game eventually?
Of course! We showed this when we debuted the stand alones. The content will be exact, stand alones were meant for Android and web users. We just ran into a wall with how much time Unity took up.
