I installed Universal Choice Descriptor. For the "old" version of the update at least, the points you get from individual choices are shown just fine, though it doesn't appear to have a total points counter.
Universal Renpy Mod functions similarly. I use it a lot for replays like this.
The dev post is pretty clear that this is a Ren'Py engine update in anticipation for Part 8, which will most likely require a new save using the updated engine in order to play without errors.
It's explained several times now but it's basically a rebuild to prep for steam. It also came with an update to the Ren'py version which has the potential to throw errors in the old build.

In my opinion, yeah. Plus it's one of the best around so it's time well spent.
That's my plan as well. Sounds like maybe can hope for Steam release in February too, so not that long of a wait if so.
