I have no idea where everyone is getting this nonsense from. They're not porting the code from BASIC to Assembly. It's Ren'Py. They're replacing the code that uses the old method with the new image layering method. This will reduce the image file sizes at the same resolution -- and then be immediately cancelled out by the switch from 1024x768 to 1920x1080. Nothing about what they're doing is going to reduce RAM usage or speed up startup time. You're expecting too much from this Tech Update!Yes. It should theoretically also use less of your PC's RAM and boot up faster.
Nor is the code laughably inefficient, with thousands of unneeded variables wasting memory. There's nothing wrong with it, other than having two ways of doing things coexisting. The Tech Update isn't going to fix the fundamental problems of Ren'Py games. It's just going to change the resolution and make it easier to make changes to old scenes. If you're hoping for more than that, you're going to be disappointed.
