You can pay the full price, or the going rate, now. It is free. It always had been. Both the older, "stable" version with all the content and the newer, "preview" version of what is still being worked on are free directly from the developer. Should there ever come a day that Dark Cookie is done with it and calls it "finished," he has already said he'll have considered it paid for. Retail price would be the lowest he could offer it on a site such as Steam.
However, don't hold your breath for that day... He wants to add 100, 200+ more characters.
See, that is the key problem with this format of development. You imply it might never be finished, and that is all well, and good BUT it doesnt lead to long term followers, money, and a finished product. I understand the desire to make one's Magnum Opus, as I have been caught in that trap myself a few times, which is why I "complained, griped, your choice" here. IMNTBHO I was just voicing a bit of disappointment in the rework of an unfinished product that could have been finished. The term KISS is used because it works. Lord help us if Grisaia went this route; we would never have seen the first 30 hour VN, and I know that this is a slightly different game, but gamers are a fickle clan, and I consider myself a pretty standard, if old school, gamer. That's why I say I will gladly check out the completed product when it comes out, and pay the developer for the chance to do it because a person's work deserves to be compensated, and my wallet opens for a good dev because I want to see them do more. Another question is what if there is a new upgrade or whiz-bang system that comes along, and DC wants to incorporate that into the mix so he decides to start over again? I mean we are apparently already feeling the effects of this when old saves are borked within an update or two. Gamers will lose, and probably already have lost, interest in the game, and that is pretty sad because it was a good game.

I do think its amusing that people who pay nothing for this game continue to gripe and moan about its progress and rework. These are literally the people that everyone (especially the devs) should ignore. Just a toxic group that adds nothing to the dialogue.

(tappity tappity tap)

That being said, I have not played this new rework yet. Maybe in a few more updates, or when more of the characters storylines are complete, I'll give it a try. Until then, I am perfectly happy replaying the old version (20.16) until then, because it's STILL GOOD. And there are also thousands of other games on this forum to play until then.

So yeah... That's my two cents.
Thanks for making the point of all the "complainers", and vilifying them for having the same opinion as you. The original work IS good; the new one is broken and just this side of vaporware. The people who you consider "toxic", and who "should be ignored by the Devs" are the players who liked the game. Forums are generally for exposing the good and the bad in a product to help others decide whether they wish to take their valuable time and invest it in a new game. A critique is not toxicity even when it is a criticism. Heck, if your post was the only post in this thread; I wouldn't play either game because you arent going to play the rework yet, and though the original was good; it wasnt complete. Why waste my time, when I can come back in a couple years and see if it is worth the time investment then? I dont consider your post toxic or complaining per se; it's a good simple review of the game in your opinion... if you remove the first paragraph complaining about the other people giving their opinions.

I understand your viewpoint. I do. I think you're jumping all over the place with ideas, complaints and comparisons to make your point - but I do understand what you are feeling.

You are playing a game that is in development.
You did not have that opportunity to do the same with Grisaia. You had to wait for them to release it before you could play it.

As for long term followers - obviously you are incorrect. There are tons of long term followers of Summertime Saga and other games/VNs found on F95Zone that have been in development for years. Summertime Saga has so many long term followers that the game and characters have their own popular memes in general culture, their own hashtags, etc. There are articles in mainstream magazines and sites about Summertime Saga.
As for money - Summertime Saga is not hurting. Yes, Summertime Saga is the exception, not the rule. Fewer than 20% of adult game developers make more than $1000 USD per month on Patreon.

And I think you comparing Grisaia being held from the public until it was released to the games played here during development is comparing apples to oranges. If you don't want to play a game in development - don't. That's your choice. But to blame a developer because of your choice is not logical nor common sense.

Before tech update has the most content but will never be finished.

After tech update is the remake and it's more at like 15% of content.

1. Because it's a kink. Do you ask that for everything?
2. I understand the feeling, since the game would never be finished.

Only 7 more days until DC releases 5 minutes of content that he already made about 6 years ago. Who is hyped?
3 years ago I completed full game, the main 2 reasons I'm playing this game again because relationship tweaker mode and Debbie current story is better than old version.

2) the tattletale student's mom who works work little toddlers?

In case he hasn't, is there any hint or hope he will?

Mostly the coding that was so shit, even the Cleveland Browns were impressed that something can be more shitty than them. Besides that, some new scenes.

Oh, and the art was updated for Debbie.

And at what point did I say that producing a game doesn't take money or time? I said it would be nice to make money without doing anything, all because in the comment I replied to, he said he saw someone say on discord that they donate money without caring about what direction the game will take, and honestly, it's been almost 10 years of game development, friend, in the meantime you could have hired help, he could have increased productivity, but now, not only do the updates take longer and longer, but on top of that the game has been rebooted, so no, I doubt the developer of this game is working very hard.
Hes just another "yandere dev" at this point.
