Quick question and I already read the change log. But didn't the old version have a school prom that MC has to attend by the end of the year? What happened to that? Was that ever completed before the new tech update?

Exactly. Game was never finished. New game = remake from the beginning.

It did not have a dance yet. It was the third goal of the three goals of the game:

1. Find out what happened to Anon's dad (finished)
2. Earn enough money for college/family (finished)
3. Choose a date for the dance (not started)

That is part of the reason for going back to the drawingboard for the vn code that was written into the Ren'Py engine. The code was barely holding together and they were finding problems every where they turned. The previous code wouldn't support moving forward in the shape it was in - especially when considering the coding desired for the third goal to be written into it. And so the tech update was started to fix/rewrite the code put into the engine - as one of several priorities of the tech update.

Plot twist: DC said he want to continually add things to the game so, it would never be truly "completed".

iirc someone previously made an estimate of how long it would take to get back to where the game was before the tech update with a 2-month cycle and it was at least 2 years or something like that.

Edit : But hey, I'm kinda happy to have the chance to see Mom Debbie with updated graphics.

Once the unplanned Debbie rework is finished, things should speed up considerably.

Based on what evidence? The dev has been stalling for years now. This endless cash cow will never be finished, and we'll be lucky for the game to get back where it was in the next 10 years.

I wouldn't plan on that. It's nice to think that way - but just like I would temper expectations of the people who attempt to estimate how long it will take, I would do the same for those who think it speed up.

It's going to take time. No one knows how long or how fast. But what I do know is when people attempt to estimate who aren't actually doing the work, they normally end up disappointed, disillusioned, and disgusted. Hell, Dark Cookie won't even make any estimates. Dark Cookie, when making the pitch for the Tech Update at the end of 2020 and start of 2021, told the paid patreon subscribers it would "take roughly the same amount of time (3 to 4 months) to complete." Subscribers then voted in the poll for which should come first, Rhonda's update or the Tech Update, with that understanding. Obviously, DC was wildly naive, mis-/under- informed, fantastically optimistic, or simply clueless about the resources (time, staff, etc) it would take for the tech update to happen properly. And he's the creator/artist/lead developer.

C'est la vie. Even if it is, it's no skin off of our back - Dark Cookie makes the game free to play to the general public. We can play v0.20.16 that has all that content if we want. We can play v21.0.0 every two months to see what is going on with it.

I was only thinking about bringing the old content over to the tech update. After the Debbie rework, in theory, more content should come with each update.

Yeah, that more content should come with each update... but I wouldn't say "speed up considerably."
I mean, from the time they stated they would start releasing whatever they have every 2 months until they stated they would focus on Debbie's route before focusing back on the tech update, this was the progress:
82% 30 Apr 2024 (551/670 tasks)
83% 31 May 2024 (557/670 tasks)
85% 01 Jul 2024 (572/670 tasks)
85% 01 Aug 2024 (573/670 tasks)
85% 01 Sep 2024 (575/670 tasks)
86% 01 Oct 2024 (577/670 tasks)

4% over 5 months. And we can't tell what progress was actually made over the previous year, because they re-aligned the tasks during that time. Though it looks like it could have been anywhere from 6% to 10% over 12 months.

And, as you and I both know, it's almost always the last 10% or so that takes the most time of any 10% of the work.

So, no, I don't have any expectation of it speeding up. It will come as it comes when it comes... but it's still going to be quite some time. We're now looking at least the end of 2026, if not 2027 or later. Don't know when, but I got things I can do in the mean time.
