Depends on your definition/perspective of "a lot". I wouldn't worry too much, the game has been in development from when one of my kids was in middle school. Now that same kid has graduated college, gotten married, and now I have a grandson, and it's still nowhere near complete (10 or so years of development).
So, I'm sure if it takes too long for you, just make sure you keep your save file, so your offspring can pick up where you left off once they're old enough

Can even become a family heirloom of sorts.
