I think he changed it. Before you had everything maxed out at the beginning. Now you have to visit the trainers but you don't have to do their minigames to increase your stats. This is most welcome in the rap battles...

I'm not sure about this but it might make a difference if Erik is in his room or at the basement. I remember i always asked Erik for help in the basement.
