I will share my 2 cents and update on
Fergie post.
1. There is no such thing as "feature proof" when it comes to 3D (doesn't matter animation or rendering <- especially rendering !). The rule is simple -> spend as much as You can afford.
2. MT vs ST -> or mainstream platform vs HEDT platform -> Blender for animation and simulation unfortunately uses ST mainly and there are test showing that Intel desktop (test was done before Zen3) are faster then AMD HEDT (ST was faster on Intel at that time and it seams with Intel 11 gen will be faster than Zen3)
3. MT -> Intel HEDT is dead, go TR.
4. GPU -> best that You can buy, ideally 3090 currently. Don't go Quadro although these will give You better viewport performance in i.e. Maya (seen only test for Maya, dunno if apply to blender and 3dsMax) but $$$ don't justify performance difference.
5. Water cooling -> if PC is not in same room or You do sleep in different room and You don't mind higher room temp (especially in summer !) and noise while working do air otherwise go water (custom water!) and ideally with external water colling set-up like MO-RA3 with location outside of You main "office | working area". Heat and noise on high end cards become real issue. This is subjective of course and some doesn't care - personally I don't stand it.
6. Iray vs Cycles - doesn't matter much they are different but are capable of producing nice result - skill is the key
7. Animation - forget DAZ go Blender. Example: try to do squat animation by pulling pelvis bone down and see how DAZ translate feet (they go under the floor - at least with version fron mid 2020, didn't tested recent ones)
7a. do "preview" in blender (eevvee or ogl) vs DAZ for animation, blender FTW
7b. Speed and quality of preview in DAZ vs Blender eevvee - DAZ is a joke. Eevvee just wins and You can do final renders with it. Granted there are some quirks, but with good shader know-how most issues can be overcomed, reflective surfaces are issue still as there is no "RT" like feature in this real time engine.
Bottom line - rule is simple - spend as much as possible prioritizing:
1. GPU - VRAM (1080Ti with 11GB will be faster then i.e. 3070 8GB when doing render of a scene with 10GB assets due to out of the vram rendering mode ! - info based on NV promotion material comparing 3080 vs 3090 for a scene with 13GB asset IIRC)
2. GPU - speed
2. CPU
3. amount of RAM - min 16GB
3D is most taxing task that can be done on PC hardware, period.
NOTE1: above is based on "semi pro" approach to the task, 3D can be done on lower spec machines but definetly it won't be comfortable.
NOTE2: AMD is no good for 3D. OpenCL is a joke that was not updated for a long time, see linus tech tips review for RDNA2 GPUS. NV RTX for a gaming is also a joke (although CP2077 with GI - I like !!!) but Optix in 3D packages (including Blender) is a real deal.
