Man... this game...
The more I play it, the more I hate it, and it started out as a solid 5*.
The dialogue is funny, the stoy intriguing and the gameplay loop is one of the most fun you can have... in theory.
But the game makes you care about things I really don't wanna care about.
The whole Treasure Rank, having to fight monsters to increase it in order to pick-up better stuff.
So do I leave the good boxes and come to them when I'm Rank S?
And yeah, of course the rank goes down if you pick-up too much without fighting.
How about food?
There is alot of useless food, but it keeps you going through trash mobs.
Then there is the good food you don't wanna waste on trash, but you can't see beforehand if a fight against a rat is just one rat, or 1 rat, 2 beefed up rats and another enemy, giving you a huge XP boost, plus making the HP and MP regeneration worthwhile.
So it becomes the 'Breath of the Wild' situation where I don't wanna hit the skeletons with my best weapons, since they are gone with one swing of the stick anyway.
And then, enemies level with you, or better, with progress.
I've managed to beat the second boss which was essentially a really cool fight (the bosses are a highlight) and noticed that enemies got stronger.
Ok, good, fine...
I went to the first boss again, cleared some side stuff... and enemies leveled up.
And then I went out and met Team Rocket (the absolute worst part of the game) and after the fight, enemies got stronger again.
I did absolutely nothing but this fight alone between 2 increases.
So the game is pushy in the most annoying way possible.
Make progress, but don't make story progress too fast!
Collect stuff, but better fight tons of enemies to collect more and better stuff, and don't collect too much stuff in a row!
Take care of worthwhile food to keep your fight going, which you need, if you wanna keep collecting better stuff.
And don't get me started on the skillpoints... dear god.
Yes, thanks for the uber useful jump... I would have loved to be more capable in anything else, but hey, why not.
Then there is the SP-Increase per level, which is apparently dictated by how often you fought until you got your level-up or something like that.
And this is where I Alt-F4 out of the game.
Reminds me of Pokémon, where the levels won't dictate your growth, but what you've fought until you got your level-up.
There are so many things to consider, which are, to me, completely anti-fun.
With how much freedom you have to tackle things, the game still tries it's hardest to keep you on a leash and play a very specific way.
EDIT:
I don't complain about the difficulty.
I play on 'Spicy' and while some things started out frustrating, you have the means to overcome everything.
But even if I would lower the difficulty for whatever reason, my problems won't magically go away.
It feels like if you ain't careful, you can play yourself into a wall.
And careful playing means thinking about what to fight, when to fight it, when to collect stuff (instead of just picking stuff up whenever you see it) and how to spend your skill-points.
Yeah, there are potions to reset the skillpoints, but I sure as hell won't carry tons of them, just to prepare for a fight, only to reset again to prepare for exploring, only to reset again to prepare for a fight... wtf...
Also, the shop just increased the prices, because of course, and it was the first red flag for me.
