Considering that area travel via the map doesn't work, the child's save data might not be very useful.
I finally figured out how to move between areas.
Press the Tab key to display the map, then hold down the Z key to show the area names. Select the location you want to go to, then press the X key to switch the map to that area.
By the way, after moving to a new area, you'll find you can't move for some reason. Press Esc and then close the map to regain movement.
