You can pick the lock on the mallbox and get a dirty magazine. I don't know why lock picks break but you can go back and try again infinite times so it's ok.

I think I am stuck since I can't find any green moss anywhere.

Hmm it seems it's just a display bug... There is nothing after 4 lvl, so you are not missing anything. Thanks for reporting it.
