Cool. You also hint in the intro that we'll have to pay rent as well, so I figured the reason it wasn't in yet is because you were still figuring that all out. In an earlier build (and therefore a lot less clothes) I still sent her to the bar even though I owned everything you could at the time, because it was so much fun getting her creampied.
I like the new splash screen, how it changes.... and
that grin. lol
I think I found all the routes in Haven and was surprised there were that many, and to think that some like the
were that nuanced.
I could swear at one time next to the thread title had VN, which I saw as a negative. Read the description, which was a plus. Then the genre, and I saw 'sandbox' and I was bewildered how the eff that would work, so I decided to check it out. It was later that I found out the difference between VN and Kinetic Novel, after finding out there was even that distinction... With being sandbox, and allowing players free will, Ren'Py for The Fixer seems more of a game engine, in which The Fixer tells a story (like virtually any game) rather that it being a Novel. So it makes sense that the VN would be dropped.
Then again, I could have imagined it...
Can't say if I remember there being a VN tag, though it's possible. My idea for the main stories has always been to try and have it as a more traditional branching paths VN. But instead of having a bunch of fluff to fill out the days you find in more traditional VNs, I have the sandbox. That way I hope for the stories to have all of the important and interesting parts with none of the filler content between.
I was wondering if there was any consensual content (except for selling yourself at the bar job when prompted?) In fact I don't even know how to do whoring outside the bar, though the NPCs keep talking about the highway... I assume it has something to do with the confidence or allure stats, but I'm not sure if there is a threshold for that? Also not sure what is happening with the bullies since I can see there's a cheat for their events but when I actually bump into them they just make some very half-hearted insults and leave.
I love the writing of this game btw, especially the humour in the interactions with Tucker.
Romantic encounters with named characters is a bit lacking right now. It's something I hope to remedy with including Emile/Flatmates. These scenes take considerably longer to write and develop though than prostitution/casual sex so it might always be the case of the game lacking larger romance options.
I believe highway whoring hasn't been implemented yet (I'd love it if it were possible to do it in other locations like the park or lake as well). Right now, the only other place where you can sell yourself is at school. If you have the Whore tag (either by having sold yourself enough at the pub, or by body writing) it might occasionally happen in between classes. If you want to increase your chances, the best way is just to click around between rooms of the school after classes are over. Every time you go to a different room (or hall, soccer field, etc.) there's a chance an event will trigger, and one of those events could be solicitation if you're recognized as a whore (or possibly if you just have really high allure, but it's less likely).
Highway whore is more a moniker or social distinction. In reality whoring will be global.
In my mind there are roughly 3 types of people in the Fixer.
Ordinary people just about getting by in life. This would be people working at the institute, Simon, Bob, Teachers and the like. We don't see much of them right now. They will not really accept money for sex.
Then people like Sammy who are described as Gamines (or Urchins if a guy) who are pretty under privileged, and while they are just trying to get by, the world around them doesn't make it easy. These are people like the girls in school, the pub, waitresses and other day workers. The jobs they do are actual jobs, but it is well known that people might proposition them for sex and well known to be accepted. They are not outright advertising themselves but desperate times means it's common for them to accept.
Then you have the Highway whores (or I guess "Haven types" of people and generally the criminal class). These are people who actively advertise themselves for sex. Considered a much lower class of society and a good chance they are homeless, addicts of some sort or some other issues that make them "not normal". A real life equivalent would probably be crackwhore but I felt such a term was a bit too degrading as they aren't quite at that level.
So while the game calls them highway whores, the job won't be restricted to the highway and more a word that means the person makes all their money only from selling sex. If Sammy is a highway whore, you can expect her to get offers no matter where in the world she is (assuming she is dressed for the job) as well as have her stand around and "advertise" herself in places like the park or lake.
But if she does advertise herself outside of places like the highway, she might get arrested, beaten up, shooed away or other less desirable things. People don't want no whores in their good Christian neighbourhood! Best to stick with the rest of the Haven types the game has to offer.
Maybe the Institute gives you a mission that requires you to go undercover as a prostitute, but the people you're trying to catch are extremely suspicious, so you need to make it very convincing that you are committed to the whore life. The idea here would be that you would progress through different stages of whoring; maybe start at the bar, then transition to the highway, get noticed there and offered a steady job as an escort for rich men, and eventually unlock something more structured like Haven (if you want to, or you can just keep whoring indefinitely if you feel like it).
When everything is in, progress will be there. You will start working at the diner since early game Sammy wont be willing to work in the pub. This will bring you interaction with the truckers in the day and highway whores at night giving you much more understanding of the world.
Things will then progress to working at the bar since it's better paid and Sammy is more adapted to the world. I want the bar story to also progress where you first days/weeks are somewhat similar to how it is now, but as time progresses they have regular events. 3 ideas in mind are having a shot girl who is someone in minimal clothing walking among the crowd trying to sell over priced shots and generally entertain the customers. Dancers which will of course tie in with the dance troupe storyline and possibly have the troupe dancing there. Topless nights (topless tuesday?) where the girls serve in only their knickers.
Then the gambling cafe which has Sammy start out like a kind of Las Vegas cigarette girl in a braless bunny costume or some such. She has to motivate the gamblers, top up their drinks, sit on their lap or blow their dice type stuff. This will be the naughtiest of the main jobs I have planned and only a very open Sammy will be able to work it. But since this cafe is owned by the landlord, failure to pay rent will have him make you pay off your debt by working there. This will force Sammy into a job she is totally unprepared for.
Highway whoring is a little different since it will be unlocked in a specific way.
The point of this story is to introduce it to Sammy so in the beginning it isn't that bad and for a good cause since she would (probably) never do such a thing. She works for the institute after all and there would be better ways to earn money than becoming the lowest of the low. But the more time she spends there for "good" reasons, the more normalised it becomes.
