Funnily enough one of the biggest issues is probably time scale by default a sim day is 25 minutes which especially early game is barely enough time for anything. The quality/price of furniture/and appliances determines how effective they are. So cheap stuff means Sims take longer to get stuff done.I've tried to play The Sims 3 & 4 several times, and I always end up feeling like I do not understand how the gameplay is supposed to work. My character doesn't like to listen to me most of the time, improving skills is completely abstracted away into grindy and repetitive time lapses that don't really amount to anything even remotely interesting, doing anything and moving anywhere feels really clunky and seems to take forever, my character's needs have to be constantly micro-managed or they get even more belligerent than they already were, there doesn't seem to be any meaningful characters or events or dialogue because of how abstracted everything gets... Maybe I'm just kind of stupid, but I can't seem to get the hang of The Sims; that, or it's simply not for me.
I used a mod to up the time to 50-75 minutes per day and feel it flows much better. You are right in that it has no meaningful dialogue since everything is in simlish. This results in the game also not having a story and therefore no meaningful characters. with very few exceptions every Sim will sooner or later get old and die.
in some ways, it's similar to this game as in you have to keep your Sims mood, hygiene and other stats up and if you don't you gonna have a bad time. But I don't think learning skills is abstracted at all it's pretty much all learning by doing. again similar to this game to improve fitness workout. and when it comes to sex it's pretty much a settings thing of which there are many in far too many menus. but once you have it dialled in your preferences it can either be a dating sim or a free for all gangbang.
