Please do tell, what are these 10 better ways? I'm assuming all 10 of them equally guarantee MC and his sisters safety.
Genuinely, looking forward to getting educated. Personally, I can't think of any other ways out of that that aren't complete gambles.
first and foremost: the problem is not just the scene itself, but also how he acts afterwards.
To continue to think paying them is a smart choice is pretty dumb.
And second: Every option including the one he is taking is a gamble. There is always gonna be risk.
A couple better ideas and option that I quickly thought of are:
1. Agree temporarily, but then afterwards look for better options. Paying them what they ask for is stupid.
2. Agree to talk but only if Beth leaves, or at least reposition her behind you. Probably won't work, but if it does it would great.
3. Refuse and call their bluff. Their position is not as strong as their were trying to make it seem, and unless they are complete idiots they will realize that as well.
4. Negotiate a compromise. He doesn't negotiate, he just whines.
5. A combination. e.g. option 2 then option 4 and then 3 or leaving to the store if needed.
Yes there is risk in the above options, but the option MC went with does not include less risk, instead he just delayed it.
And of course: don't show excessive weakness and/or fear
