That's the correct place, you need rope to get in through the window and the desk is up the stairs.

I'm struggling as well. So far I've found 3 letters, but I maybe should have read the letters more carefully, since I don't know where to go next, and I can't (at least I think I can't) reread the letters.

The last letter is infront of the door to the house just north of Melanie's house.

I headed north and checked all the houses north of Melanie's house and found nothing. The last letter I found was east of the docks.
