Can anyone fill me in on the instances of when you want to avoid combat until you recruit a certain character so that they don't miss out on exp? Certain examples I know so far are Aka, Robin, and Hilstara. I just got to Devil's Pass act 1 following a guide but now I want to play it blind moving forward and I really don't want party members missing out on exp just because I fought monsters the moment I see them

Ardford Summit is another instance. The character's name is Vhala. There might be more instances, I remember only about this one.

Thanks! I did a quick skim through the party member list in the wiki and walkthrough and also found Altina. I should probably stop worrying about this and just go full blind playthrough but it's hard not to knowing the limited exp

There are instances, when this game doesn't make much sense. Altina's case is one of them. She gets bonus EXP based off of the main protagonist level. Does that really make sense? Not really. Does this happen for all characters you gain? Again, not really... Do EXP matter for anyone beside Simon (outside of combat)? Again, AFAIK only Simon's EXP really matter. So what's the point? ... To fuck with the player, I guess? o_O

the only character you got something significative is robin, because if you collect all xp with her she unlock her lighing lance spell the fight before a boss weak to lighting. the other charater matter very little, and from early to mid chapter 3 any difference is utter maeangiless. a single level up give you a pittance of stats (and i mean 2/3 points at best) it's don't change anything. in early game with low stat a few point can be relevant, but more relevant it's the skill unlock.

in reality vhala don't join the most relevant fight hidden port and i don't remember the sx wall outside that there is no fight in the section were she isn't mandatory,

you want pick up her earlier because she gain rp in some scene. the xp balance is utterly irrelevant

There is the magical rifts, no? I thought you could do some of them without Vhala if you don't talk to her beforehand (although, like you said, the only character that has a significant advantage when minmaxxing XP is Robin)

All party members you get in CH1 get no bonus based on Simon's LVL and also Nalili + Carina + Riala. Haven't played further than CH3 yet. But, could you tell me when does Robin's LVL matter in CH1? I'm curious.

In the last sections of CH1 when invading the manor full of unpeople, if you minmaxxed Robin's XP she learns Lightning Lance just before the boss, which makes the fight MUCH easier.

Honestly with the absurd amount of detail in this game, I would suggest making multiple saves as you play and reading the guide so you don't miss anything. I missed like one step from the guide with a later character and my rep with them was forever behind the guide's number. Don't think it was anything critical, but rep only locks out at 100, so faffing about can backfire later on in brutal ways.

We'll see, I tried going in with a guide but the constant alt-tabbing just became too tedious for me and I'm still in act 1 so I suppose I'll just wing it on this run and be surprised at my decisions in the end. I'd probably just do an optimized 2nd run anyway if I could be bothered later on

Anyone know where I can get the pure and corrupt material on "Save the Queens" quest? I read the walkthrough and it says it's in Iris Camp, but there's nothing there except bunch of dead tree

You get the corrupt materials automatically once you've freed and healed the captive succubi, and Iris has left. The pure materials--along with a couple of Kingsfail leaves you'll want to pick up--are found in various shining spots throughout the area.

Ah. That doesn't have lasting consequences, like more XP for example, but thanks for the explanation.

Basically my problem is, that sometimes you get bonuses based off of Simon's high LVL, sometimes you don't. And that's fine, you know, RPGs... higher LVL = better, right? Surely, you wouldn't get punished for being too high LVL, too good at the game, right? Right? Well, except for the end of chapter 2 situation, where if your Simon is LVL 34, you get worse bonus than if you are LVL 33 (which is the objectively best outcome). And yea, you just get 5K less XP for the whole party, it doesn't ruin the game for you... But that also could have been fixed/changed over the years. Now, I've only finished CH3, I haven't gotten further yet, so I don't know if there are more situations, where the game screws you over, but... Oh well.
I like the game anyway though.

You sure its not a anti-cheat thing? usually if you get a lower reward in a higher level or higher number of enemies defeated (orcent) it means the game was made so that if wouldn't be possible unless you cheated

Yea, I'm sure. It's admittedly difficult to reach LVL 34 by the end of CH2 and perhaps not optimal, but anyway, it's possible. Reasoning is as usual, ketchup mechanic (misspelled on purpose). Like, if you are 1K XP away from LVL 34 and you get +10K XP or you are let's just say 1K XP over 34 and you get +5K XP... Do the math yourself. Doesn't feel right, but that's how it is.

no, it's mostly a catchup mechanic. if you are so underleveld to compromise the ability to complete the mantory fight you receive a boost of xp to compensate.
it's less "you are punished to having higher level" and more "don't let your level be to low to compromise the ability to complete the game".
