I mean, we have basically immortal villains with convenient weaknesses that put them out of commission until the writers need them back again for a reason. (Darkseid, Emplate, and Ra's al Ghul for some examples.)Clairmont had this idea for Magneto where Magneto slowly sees he is becoming like his tormentors and changes, Charles dies, Magneto takes over Charles's legacy.
But then he realized that comic books are supposed to keep going and not be so final as to permanently kill characters and remove villains.
How many characters have died? How many times have they died?
...Don't answer that please. We will go all day about it.
Also, after BOTH Magneto and Xavier died, Banshee took over the new institute before Emma Frost ultimately became the new headmaster. (Correction: Xavier was still alive when Banshee was running the institute in his stead. He was only the acting director though and it was Emma Frost who took over "officially".)
