These can screw up your game and some nifty developers have figured out if the save game file has been tampered with.
The safest way is to variable cheat, which comes with some unwanted side effects too.
But at least you are seeing the different scenes in the game, you just skip the endless grind.
I usually just edit countable things like money and stuff like that (i.e. the new stuff for the update). Other variables should stay untouched
Most of these "I hate the players and force them to grind endlessly" need a lot of money and materials

How to enable the console is described numerous times in this thread and other places too.
Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems certain potions are permanent now when use. Maybe it the unstable vs stable potions?
