what do you do with the metal scraps?

I would think there is a forge somewhere to use them. But I did not encounter a single one.

4th level lol .. both the chest and door in 1st starter area are locked and no key in sight

Some times it doesn't spawn a key and you won't receive it from any enemies, so you need to restart the level from the options menu, you will keep everything you found in the level on restart and it will re-spawn the level with new items to loot hopefully including the key
