I do, you don't see a lot of the stuff that gets cleaned up in the final release. Not only by the tool itself but by me.

Everytime I create a new MTL one of the things I do is find a bad translation and slightly edit the prompt or code to see if I can fix it. Its how the tool has improved so much since the first game I did.
and I very much appreciate the effort. Most of the time the folks that do the MTL don't even take the time to look through the script to make sure it is neat. So of course you would get flap from others because MTL has done everyone dirty with garble texts that would make one lose braincells the moment they try reading it.

Just wondering, did you ever check if it's a difference in Quality between GPT 3.5 and 4.0?
I haven't yet, I never even got access to it sadly but even if I did its just too expensive for me. At 15x the cost I'd hit the quota before I could even finish translation of a game.

However someone else has tested GPT-4 with White Album 2 and the results were great.

As for the difference, honestly I'm not 100% sure. The Bishop game I MTLed recently actually does a decent job of having some solid writing at times too. I'd chalk that up to the original script actually being decent compared to most RPGMaker games.

Just checked GPT 3.5 and while being decent it's noticeably worse than 4.0

Haruki: "Ah..."

Finally, it started to rain.

Ever since I arrived at [R Airport], the sky that might have started crying at any moment stubbornly held back its tears, freezing them with the cold wind.

The deafening sound of jet engines slowly recedes.

Is there regional pricing for the 4.0 access? In Europe it's about 20$ a month, is there a different price where you're from?
Also do you know if the GPT 4 API is even already available?

Edit: Nvm, yeah im dumb. Obviously there's different pricing for the API..

It's not the price of ChatGPT Plus but of the API itself. The main advantage of the API is that it doesn't have a filter (Well it does but its way way less tame) which is why translating porn isn't an issue. Plus its the easiest and fastest way to use it programmatically.

Right now I use GPT 3.5 Turbo which is 0.002 cents per 1k tokens. GPT 4 is available but its 0.03 cents per 1k tokens and requires you to apply for access (Which I did but no response).

They also use a special prompt for that WA2 translation which I did at the start. But after noticing it causes so many random hallucinations in 3.5 I've downsized to a simple "Reply with the english translation" for most things.

TBH I might try to apply again for GPT 4 and find a really really small game to work with and see how well it does. I've actually increased the efficiency a lot when it comes to token usage.

The reality is that some games will never receive a translation unless we can somehow automate the process. Hell this game is 4 years old, short, with a fairly popular mainline game to boot and it didn't even get a translation thread. What's going to happen with all the other less popular games?
man, reading this hurts. I get the edited mtl and honestly I can't even imagine. I have only respect to fan translators even to this day, and again reading this hurts because of how it reflects the amount of translation work must go through for a "short game" like this.

sadly, but this IS the compromise that you either learn to deal with or gtfo.

Honestly the MTL haters baffle me. I get why they hate MTL but there are so many games out there that have never received a translation or never will. What's the solution for that? If we can't have someone manually go in and translate every line? We finally are making some real progress with AI on getting some actual readable text but all they can do is point out the small flaws and recognize none of the progress that's being made.

I can attest to this, even some short and not even great games take quite a bit of time to make an edited MTL for just due to having to go through every single line of dialogue editing grammar and such, as well as fixing the many issues that easily pop up when translating japanese games especially with the Plugins. I spent around a month creating an edited MTL of Ancient Relics and Lewd Monsters, and that was entirely a passion project with no payment or whatever. The result of that work was just another game uploaded that most people download, play and give no second thought to it. (Though it's not like I actually expected anything more than that, it was mainly a learning experience)

To me at least, you deserve a lot more credit for the work you've put into the tool + translations, and if people want quality translations then maybe they need to pick up Translator++ and try it for themselves.

the best argument I've seen against MTL is "Now that there's MTL, it will deter people from giving it proper translation". Yet I see games with goofy MTL be given proper translation all the time

the worst one I've seen yet is this. How tf do you play if you don't even understand the items & skills lmao

Playing it without any translation is better than mtl even if you don't understand Japanese.

I wouldn't think to deeply about the motivation of people, who go around to complain about everything that's an eyesore or mildly inconvenient to them. After all the majority of these kinda people just like to point out problems without ever thinking about solutions themselves, because it makes them feel superior to the person they criticise.

I personally appreciate a at least intelligible MTL translation, since it's a real pain to play games with translation tools or wait until hell freezes over for someone to translate some forgotten games manually.

Also lets face it, a majority of h-games don't have such a complex story that you need university level spelling and grammar to understand what's going on :')

Well, I just wanted to thank you for the MTL translations, it might be weird but English is not my native language and for me who has basic English it's easier to understand MTL

The good point about Kagura games and Otaku Plan is that they decensor and translate anything with hand, but only the Games with high amounts of sales and downloads on dl site. So its quite the Interesting attempt to use MTL with Chat GPT. Its only a question of time until a full translation without problems will come out from this.
So I hope that you also maybe try to MTL old RPG Maker games from Hukidamari ? or other circles if possible ? Or doesnt it work on old RPG maker engines ?
And thank you for your work :)

I haven't tested it with really old rpgmaker engines yet other than ACE. But if they are similar there's no reason it can't work with them. Eventually the day will come when I try one out.

Looking forward to see the attempt. Thanks again, and please do as you want and dont let others destroy your mood on working on games you want to translate.

how can you play a game when you don't even know what option to choose and a slight bit of the story? I played raw game once, and the torture of keep using the phone for google translate, and the need to memorize what option does what, I don't want to go through that again
there is a simple trick - use a live translator that pulls the text from memory and displays the translated text in another window. live translation is often better than raw/no MTL because you don't run into script errors every other game (it does not edit game files). in my experience textractor is currently the best program for non-unity games, and unity has the bepinex plugin.

I've never used any gpt tool before. Can you explain what these examples helped you accomplish?
Code:
Examples:
if(v[20]>=2) >> if(v[20]>=2)
<\\C2> >> <\\C2>

Examples:
if(v[20]>=2) >> if(v[20]>=2)
<\\C2> >> <\\C2>
Those are script in some of the text. The if statements usually shows up in choices to check whether to display a choice or not. Sometimes chatgpt likes to add spaces to that and it fucks it up so the example is meant to guide it to not do that.

The \\C2 is a color code often found in dialogue text to make colors. Chatgpt also likes to mess with the formatting of this so the example is there to make sure it leaves it alone.
