SAZ does this as a labor of love when he has time, which is why he never asked or accepted offers of money.
As to someone finishing the main game, it is unlikely as SADDOG already took a year or more off from it before and no one want to do it.

It was most likely an experiment to see how many Patrons he could get back by dropping a very small update or two. I'm guessing the result was not enough to motivate him to continue.
