Not possible for protagonist to do it yet.

Has to do with the volumetric fog is my guess. Ticked it off and no more void. Running an AMD processor if that matters.

How to access character customization? Can't find it for the life of me

I was looking for it a long time and you can customize your character by pressing "I"
