At least from their talks they seem to know the area, at least raughly...or that is the impression i got.
None of them is familiar with the area they are in. They know some of the main streets by name, but that's it.

Have you noticed any malls or supermarkets or large stores since they left the campus? I didn't and neither did they.

"Let's go on a scouting expedition to find a mall! You go this way, you go that way, you go this other way and I'll wander over here. We can cover the compass! Yay!"

Yeah, that wouldn't be dumb at all.

Well, they do know where they are, they know the streets and Laura was said to know the city pretty well thanks to her job.
I don't know how large this city is suposed to be, but something like knowing where the larger supermarkets are seems kinda normal when you live there for years, even if you are not a regular there.

Yeah, not saying they should start blindly searching. Just wondering that it never came up in some talk.

Well, they don't know where any nearby mall or supermarket is, or they would have gone there, instead of holing up in some strange house that garage-lady pointed out for them.

So, why don't they know? As you said, it seems like they should. Well, perhaps they would, but the developer told them, "You don't know shit about this neighborhood!" So, there you have it. Developer plot reasons. Not stupid decisions by the MC or his companions. Not a plot hole by the developer. Just developer's choice for his reasons.

Maybe garage-lady knows of a good source of food and other needed provisions. She got that gas mask somewhere. I doubt that she found it in that gas station. Perhaps there's a nearby shopping center with a Dick's Sporting Goods and other useful stores [a CVS and a Walmart would be nice].

Wait until their teeth start falling out!

You might think I'm kidding, but just one of the things they need to find is a source of vitamin C. While it would take months for them to actually start losing teeth, vitamin C deficiency can cause other detrimental issues like lethargy.

I have no idea how they would find fresh fruits and vegetables though, so their best bet might be supplements, which is one other reason to find some place that has medicines.

Yes, not saying that is the cast acting dumb.
I was just wondering a bit that's all, maybe expecting to hear it come up at some point when they have one of their talks. Like the MC asking Laura if she knows some mall/supermarket/store close by, or on their way to the hospital, to stock up their food or find gear.

It would make sense for Laura to know the city, since she's on the road so much. At least her job seems more like that of a regional representative. And as a woman who's constantly on the road, she'd likely know the location of every available toilet in the area. :ROFLMAO:

There are already problems with getting enough food - and most of it is junk food so far.
Honestly I'm curious as to how well plants would actually grow. The fog doesn't seem to kill the grass/trees, but it could be because they're already well-established.

True, but the main reason for their lack of food is that they didn't try to loot a mall so far, they could also use more backpacks if they are at it. Thought to be fair, the amount of food they can carry is limited.
Malls are barely surviving even in thriving modern towns, in one that's on the verge of death the only mall is long since dead. Or it's a 'strip mall' situation.

Backpacks, yeah. The MC mentioned there were some at the clothing shop early on, he really should have grabbed more.

If they are being fed from a major city elsewhere they are fine....but if localised (if their own city big enough)...with no one to run them...they would all shut down very, very quickly with no one there. They do not run 24/7 without human intervention.
They're almost certainly being supplied from out of the affected area, but eventually it'll be seen as pointless so the town will be cut off.

I think one of the challenges that the group is continuing to deal with is that the one person who 'should' know about resources near where she lived - Shelley - was about the last person on the planet you wanted to ask for directions; she could get to her classes for the semester but I imagine she had challenges any time a new location was added to the class schedule for a new semester.

As to being able to find malls or super stores, I liken this to my own medium size city:

I know where 5 major grocery stores and one super store are (having shopped at all of them) and can easily reach them... by car. I can also find two major malls, one 15 minutes away by car and the other 45 minutes away.

If I had to work downtown and escape from my work location though, all my 'how to get to those suburban stockpiles of food and gear' would be based on taking major highways with a car. They would be walkable in decent weather but in the fog or the modern equivalent (from a LOS and health danger perspective), a hard snowstorm with dangerous wind chill, it could take a week or more to walk the 5 - 10 miles to reach them given the need for rest stops and food breaks with time committed to finding a safe place to rest each day of travel.

Then - are the stores I know about even in the direction of travel I believe is most likely to lead to getting out of the danger area?

From downtown, almost all the stores I know about are now west of me and if the direction of travel most likely to reach safety was walking NE - I would not know shit about the stores in the needed direction of travel. Take away WAZE and Google Maps as well as my now limited LOS and I can only hope to get lucky by finding a gas station or corner grocery store that has not been fully looted - and multiply the quantity of food needed by 4 given the size of the group.

The other thing that is easy to ignore is that these are office workers and a semi-frail college student who live a sedentary life style - so not used to a lot of physical exertion.

IMO - they are toughening up to the rigors of traveling in the fog hazard but the lack of a proper diet coupled with the damage the fog seems to do to the respiratory systems of our band of four makes this feel like a losing proposition. They need to find better gear (especially to filter out almost all fog to avoid more damage to the lungs) and a source of safety with enough food to address the balanced diet issue for at least 3 days of rest and recovery.

I'm hoping that the woman in the gas station (she's the first person I've seen with proper gear to protect her lungs - assuming the gas mask actually has viable filters of course) can help with more than just the safe place to rest up.

If she is local, she may well be the key to finding both better food and gear nearby, because she Has to be better at navigating her neighborhood and the surrounding area than Shelley.

Cheers!! :coffee:

I have been wondering why garage-lady is staying in the garage. Is she local? That would help a lot. Did she go to the gas station to pick up or leave off a vehicle and got stuck there? She obviously has scouted out the immediate area. She knew which house was safe and which were not. So why is she staying in the service station and not in the house? Is she protecting someone or something there that can't be moved?

We didn't see much of that service station. From the front we can see the reception/waiting room and two service bays. There was probably a supply room with bathrooms behind the front room. Didn't seem to be the kind of gas station that had a lot of food [like an attached Chick-fil-A], like we see in the modern service centers. So she must go out from time to time to replenish supplies. Where does she go for that? And why doesn't she stay there?

I hope we will get the answers to my questions in the next release.

If there's a Sam's Club it would be a great location. Almost endless food & supplies for the group. Also, the burned ones and witches are unlikely to have a membership card... :p

I'm going to guess that she's working on a vehicle that won't get bricked by the fog so she can make her getaway. Maybe some electric thing with the air intakes blocked or otherwise insulated. I'm also going to assume she's a cop and if she wasn't riot squad herself, she had access to their armory and that's where she got her gasmask and other gear. Can probably get the rest of our team kitted up, assuming the police station isn't swarming with burned ones by now. Maybe that would be too convenient, though.

Why would an electric vehicle need air intakes?

We don't know that she is.
You're right, we don't know for sure.

She was there when the crew got there, and it's pretty certain that the shotgun shot that was heard came from her shotgun at or near the garage. So, she's there for a significant amount of time. Does she stay some place nearby? Could be. Perhaps when she was scouting out the area, she found two livable houses and pointed the MC to the one farther away.

That still doesn't explain her (at least occasional) presence at the service garage.

By the way, here's a good render of them approaching the service station:
View attachment 1762126822981.webp

The front shows about as clearly as one could wish. But there is little to see of the surrounding area. So as yet, we don't know what structures are nearby. You can see a tree to the right.

I bring up the tree, because this is them when they leave the garage:

The presence of the trees they walk through, the one in the picture before and the ones that can be seen in the background indicate (to me, at least) a residential area.

That still does tell me why she was there, or how or where she gets her supplies.

...also showing that "Chad's Louisiana Kitchen" is one mile east. Since we'd been discussing food and all...

OTOH, I have to wonder how much the garage is (or was, before the fog came) still a going concern. We're set, just like in N&T, in the southeastern US. And in reasonably-modern times--the cars, the tech, and the clothing are all "current" (i.e., they don't look notably dated). But the gas pumps are of a type that hasn't been used for 40+ years, and the gas prices displayed in your second picture are about that outdated--and since we're in the US, those are in dollars per (US) gallon. The lowest I remember ever paying was about 65¢/gal.

Perhaps the "gas station" part shut down some time ago, but the "service center" was still running?

Hell yeah! Let's go get us some etouffee! They went the wrong way! What's a mile in an acidic fog, when Cajun/Creole food can be had!?

The garage anomalies I attribute to asset availability.

Edit: I figure the garage looked good to the developer for his purposes, and he just accepted the weird gas prices, etc.

Dev Update November 2nd, 2025

November 2025's Exclusive Wallpapers

With it being pretty rainy here for the past few weeks as the seasons change, we decided to make November 2025's Exclusive Wallpapers about dealing with the rain. Or, as Shelley does, playing in the rain. Also, for those of you in the states, don't forget to set all your clocks correctly for Daylight Saving Time last night.
