I can't believe I almost gave this game 5 stars. Had I not played until the end, this would be a glowing review about how well-written and hot the game is. Honestly, I feel robbed. What even is the purpose of this game? Because it genuinely feels like it was made with the sole purpose of "deconstructing" the genre while taking a shit on anyone who liked these characters.
You'll see a lot of people talking about the ending here, and I want to make it clear that I didn't subtract 3 whole stars just because I disliked the ending. But holy fucking shit, what a terrible ending. You basically have one choice that matters with each girl in the entire game: fuck them or don't. If you do, congratulations, you just earned yourself a bad ending where everyone is sad and miserable, all while the MC becomes the spitting image of his shitty dad. If you chose not to fuck any of them, however... why are you even playing this game? For the riveting plot? The overarching storyline? Give me a fucking break. And the fact that these choices happen at the very beginning of the game means you can't see the good/virgin ending unless you play through the whole thing or "cheat" with URM.
I'm honestly struggling to understand how this game fell off so hard. And it wasn't just the ending. Everything after a certain point in the game becomes incredibly bleak and edgy, as if the author started hating his own game or something. The sex scenes are no longer intimate like they were in the beginning. Instead, they feel robotic and pointless. The dialogue that was once witty and lighthearted becomes a soap opera of drama, tears and intrigue that never goes anywhere. We're left with a lot of loose ends, making the game feel unfinished and sloppy. Important characters like Yoko and Gloria are severely neglected by the story, and you don't even get to fuck Gloria until the very end of the game.
And if you're wondering why the game has such a high rating despite the polarizing ending, just look at the older reviews. This was an enjoyable game until a certain point, then it was thrown in the trash for the sake of cheap drama and a bad ending. Not even bittersweet, just bitter. And to a lot of people, sad ending = deep, while happy ending = unrealistic power fantasy. That's one thing I fucking hate about modern media.
All in all, this doesn't look like a game meant to arouse. It looks like the product of an author that began to hate his own creation and decided to put an edgy spin on a story that really didn't need it. As an author, is it fulfilling to take a shit on an otherwise bright and well-written story? Is it rewarding to butcher several characters that people grew attached to? If the purpose here was to subvert all expectations, then consider me successfully subverted. Art is subjective, I suppose. In which case, here's my 2 stars. I'm tempted to lower it to 1, but I won't do that SOLELY because the KK models look good. To me personally, though, I'd give it 0 stars if I could.
And just to be clear, this game had great things going for it. Likeable characters, beautiful visuals, world-building, fun dialogue, good pacing. All of that completely falls apart in the latter half of what could've been a masterpiece.
