It is VR, means Left-Right so basically the same as side-by-side. If you have LR_180 (meaning 180 degree view) in the filename then the VR animation player will automatically play the file in that format so you don't have to manually choose it every time.

I have the meta quest 1, should be pretty cheap nowadays and the quality is good enough for any videos not to mention animations which do not have that much detail. Only thing to mind is the video resolution which the meta quest 1 can do 4800x2400 max resolution in my experience without stuttering (quest 2 and 3 can deal with more), but you can always encode the bigger videos to smaller res with ffmpeg.

The free DeoVR player also supports DLNA so you can share a folder on your PC with all the videos and stream them in quest when they are connected to your home network.
If you have some more money to spend, maybe go for the quest 3, but it has the LCD screen compared to quest 1's OLED and some people say the blacks are more like grey on LCD screen. I don't know how much of a visual impact that is though.
Also the quest headsets do not need to be connected to your PC with a cable. It can use wireless link so you can play VR games from your PC too, Honey Select 2 VR for example
