I never got the script tagging to work either, but you can always just use the basic power setting without a pattern.

It is quite popular solution, actually. There're a lot of games that use registry. I don't know why, but still.
Best guess is the persistence of it, it'll stick around through most uninstalls unless you use a deep clean program like Revo Uninstaller or something akin to it.
The new version is certainly more complicated. I think the versions before 4.0 were simpler, and they also run much better on slower devices.
