This 100%, and a big part of why I have my preferences this way in addition to the art. I feel like "eastern" games are much less comfortable with ambiguity of status or magnaminous power dynamics. The idea of "there must be a higher and a lower, a winner and a loser" feels deeply culturally entrenched.

And this is exactly the crux of the difference in approach.
It is a cultural heritage in Asia, and is the expected norm, by almost everyone in the region.
Whereas many "western" societies (Europe, the Americas, and other western styled demographics) have a completely different approach of equality and co-operation, almost compassionate, mostly loving.
Exceptions are perhaps BDSM scenarios, but even they differ again in the approach around permissions.
It is a different mindset, borne from a different upbringing and society.

Oh, that's hideous, that tension seems to me like a weakening of the couple's relationship. One can see it as a challenge to overcome, but it suggests NTR vibes. Would have been more inclined to play that game if you'd said that "one, the other or both" were according choices you could make in the game.

You may have a point. I'm sure even in the global internet culture, education and group culture still are a factor. I once mentioned netorare in a post at loverslab.com, about a mod called Troubles of Heroine. Got a reply from a japanese user who was excited that the non-japanese public was aware of the term - it seems like it was perceived as cultural heritage by that user, at least.
Read another "theory" that suggested manga and hentai follow strict, tried-and-proven commercial formats, and that the Japanese AVN industry was much more established and professional, producing a constant flow of stories that meet high demand.
I wonder if Korean manhwa follow the same trend? These cultures are both alien to me, but judging strictly from the art style, Korean drawing looks a tiny bit less cartoonish, suggesting they might be less formal about taboo subjects in general. I'm not passing judgement. Japanese made it an art of hiding sexual themes in plain sight with rituals and cuteness, and all of it is interesting.

I often fall back to words like assertive or confident, rather than dominant, for that same reason. Sometimes it's the FMC that puts me off. If she's too invested in her own cravings and acts as if the MC didn't matter, I call it a miss. She may well be neither a QoS nor a total slut, but the kind of cuckoldry where the FMC has free pass to follow her attraction to others and the MC is just expected to enjoy it, not my thing.
I do have a guilty curiosity for a scenario where the MC finds his significant other cheating, and immediately discovers he enjoys it, not because he's a loser, but because he's got a grip on his own game and uses the fact that the FMC is oblivious of his awareness of the cheating, to his own advantage. This requires a rather dominant MC, capable of a bit of manipulation, plotting ways to have fun with the situation and, in the end, to reclaim his LI and himself cuck the lover/bull out of the picture. This could be fun to play, alas, not the kind of tropes NTR fans are usually interested in, as it would mean a plot twist that turns the NTR into either NTS or loyal endings. Anyone know a game like this? If an author really could pull an MC capable of reclaiming his LI and who also avoided the tropes of broken marriages, making the NTR entirely of the LI's own doing, and making her a likeable character only through the MC's eyes, where she couldn't otherwise save herself from being seen as a bitch, I'd be down to checking it out, but this is the kind of "ramification" that doesn't get filtered by tags. Certainly would also lend some meaning to a "compassionate" MC

I absolutely agree that the scenerio of a male MC finding out that his wife/gf has been hooking up with someone else and getting turned on by it can be a great intro to a bigger story or picture, so long as it develops from there, and leads to things like swinging/open relationship/everyone getting in on the action and just living a more open, sex filled life in general. The problem is that it might never appeal entirely to one group or the other. Most NTR players enjoy and demand negative emotions, most sharing/swinging players (myself included) want to avoid them. If the game started with being cheated on, either the author spoilered enough, or they released the full game in one go. I wouldn't like to invest in a game unless I were pretty sure the ending would be to my liking, and with no dread and gloom or any negative emotions along the way. I mean, I can see all sorts of problems with making a game like that, but I'd love to play it.

Anyone play NTR Chat - My Girlfriends Travel? Picked it up today but it sounds like it is moving from what seemed like a mutual open relationship right into chaotic relationship breakdown territory. To be fair, the creator used the word NTR even if this game starts off much more in the NTS realm. Also the MC is already outrageously cheating, because he isn't updating Elle, and worse he's allowed a psycho girl to believe he is her one true love.
Pity if it goes off the rails. Amusingly Devin's weird proxy cuckold game is kind of fun but it is fun because Devin is just the side chick. Ultimately she's disposable so the fact she's blatantly setting up the MC as a future replacement for her husband she can openly cuckold is irrelevant. You can enjoy the chaos and say "lol you were always disposable" at the end.
However if Elle is going to outright distance herself from the MC as well then the whole context of the game changes. Kind of hoping the complaints are a storm in a teacup. Expect the worse though because the worse tends to happen

Gave up on it after the "crazy" chick reappeared for the 3rd time in the recent update, completely ignoring the fact that I rejected her from the start... You can't even do a restart and reject her; the story forces her back in no matter what...
Cannot stand that happening in a story. No means no damn it. Don't just throw her back in and the story act like she's been a thing all along...
It has potential to be pretty good, and I think Elle and the MC will ultimately be fine.
Unless the dev decides NTR/Elle cheating is more profitable...
But the story is a mess.
Right now, it is appropriately categorized in the "slopyard"...
