Ren'Py - What a Legend! [v0.7.05] [MagicNuts]

played v0.3.01, so far the game is very promising. game has fantastic art as is self evident if you check the screenshots. story and dialogue are good, there are some funny moments and the MC is actually bearable. right now there seems to be a lot of content missing, you are only allowed to visit a tiny fraction of the map and there are only very few scenes. gameplay is a bit repetitive basically waiting until a certain period of the day and then doing fetch-type quests to proceed, repeat. Day/week system is not utilized at all. There are only fake-choices in the game that have no impact on anything. UI is slick and in general I'd say that the visual department is pulling the heavy weight for sure. Very promising and could be an easy 5 stars once more content is added and the gameplay gets more refined.

Pros:
- Quality and design of characters.
- Some humour always helps
- The plot seems interesting, just hoping it won't be stretched in 100+ updates just following patreons' wishes. A dev should stick on his/her own plan, eventually adding extra features

Cons:
- The MC. Too cheesy, too immature, he's indeed an idiot and that ruins the experience for a good part.
- Grind. Some sex-scenes requires way too much grind, while other ones are basically quickly unlocked. It's not a real "con", but a bit frustating.
- Sex dialogues: I'm not a fan of a words-wall and 300 sentences for a single sex scene, but repeated dialogues like "You're soooo gggooooodd, yyyyyyyesss, bbbbbbig" that often happen in game don't appeal me that much, actually turn me off. Change it with rough rp, whatever you want, just not something a 12yo boy could write.

Conclusion: there's a lot of room for improvement and I hope to see further updates that could help this game to detach itself from the 100+ copies of similar games around on the forum-online.

I'll increase my score to 4 stars because I noticed a huge improvement in animation and I really like Chestnut's artstyle. The writings too seem somewhat better compared to the previous scenes and the "anime" trip really got me offguard lol

(After v0.6):
The creation of a game is indeed a resource consuming process and I appreciate there're devs out there that imbue their passions and their visions of a VN(for me it's) in their works. On ther other hand after 2+ years I think there's indeed something wrong in their planning and on the long way it could cause some problems with their supporters.

First of all: is the game worth of playing? YES 100%
Does the game need indeed 10-11 months for a single update? Well yes and no. Compared to the previous releases I see unfortunately the same Patreon's formula, that is the bigger the income is, the slower the updates are, or so I'd tend to think at the beginning, as on the contrary Magicnuts has always shared info on this forum and not only on patreon/discord.
In this version we've basically a side-story with Rose and I loved every single visual detail, especially her sexier(for me) demon-version, while what put me off were mostly the "Think" moments(I mean 1-2 times, but every single time..) and the fact that your choices as player again don't change a single thing, so what's the point of selecting an option? In this case the update drags itself just for unlocking x-scenes and there you have it, or so was my impression while playing it.
Do I dislike the new release? No. Am I disappointed? Yes, for a good part, as I was expecting something more after almost 1 year, especially comparing a part-time production to the actual one, that in theory should be full-time. However Patreon is Patreon and I can't blame devs for taking their own time, even though I'm sure they need to reconsider their concept, because comparing the actual existent content to the whole in-game map I highly doubt the game will be completed in the next 5-years, actually I'm quite sure it'll never be finished as many here think, especially if it takes so long for just a single (small) update.

I'll decrease my rating to 3/5 stars again for the reason I mentioned.

EDIT 11/23:
I think over 1 year for a small update shows indeed that there's something wrong in the development of the game. I doubt we'll see 30 scenes with Gomira and I think we'll also have maybe 2 hours of gameplay, with 50-70% of "Think" times as I already noticed by some weekly posts and we'll see the next one maybe in 2025 if lucky. I'm going to stop following the game for a while because I don't see a change coming in this direction.
2/5 stars just for the nice art, back to 3 or more once something finally drops.

(v.7.0.03):
Moving back to 3 stars because it finally dropped and the art is always the main strength of the game. However the story seems somewhat meh. I found the one including the dragon way more interesting than Gomira's, even though I like her character. 20 years in prison and she agrees about fucking with her old friend/enemy like nothing happened. Sex scens also mostly vanilla and the amazon pose was a very nice touch, but the dialogues(yeah I know who read it?)are always underwhelming and I usually avoid to read them after the 2nd time.
Overall an update that I enjoyed, but I'm still convinced the game will never be finished. Too many zones, lack of progress of the main story and over 2 years for a 4-5 hours update, reading slowly, are way too much for a (small) team working fulltime on it.
I'll keep following it every now and then, but they really need to find a way to speed up the whole thing.

Well, I have finished all the content that there was so far and I must say: what a wonderful fucking game, the story at the beginning begins completely different from what I have played so far (and I have played quite a few), I have laughed at the whores and everything hahaha, it is seen that the game will be great because I have been many hours and it is only the initial area. The girls are all very pretty, with good design, my favorites for now would be Holly and Myrtle

at the beginning the only "bad" thing was that the characters kept moving their mouths and arms and I thought it was indefinitely until I saw that it was until they finished talking, apart from that then I get used to it, nothing to reproach

First of all, a wonderful art style. In this regard, the implementation of hte project of this style on the ren'py engine seems really hard
But nevertheless, they did it well, everything was done perfectly.

The plot is constantly moving and this distinguishes the game from many others, which quickly turn into chewing gum.
Moreover, the game and interactions seemed so interesting to me that when I discovered the progress tracker, I began to check almost every day how things were going.

this is the most amazeing game ive played so far the art is marvelous its hard too find equal to it. the story is fun and engageing while most try to be funny i think this game actually is. characters are promising and game has an interesting feel to it. i would recomend that everyone try it you wont be dissapointed

one of the best games ive played in a while, all the girls are hot and the story is actually funny and not awkward. too many games have awkward and unfunny dialogue but this is really well written. art is really great. and no NTR. I really think this team knows what people are looking for in a game. Now all we need is a harem and threesome foursomes....

This game is very good, and not in the Barry Zuckerkorn kind of way, but actually very good. Incredible art, great writing, and a nice sense of humor throughout. Glad I found this when I did, but once the game is fully produced, it will likely be one of the best out there! Just wow!

Love this, the art, the story. We need more games like this. Looking forward to future updates and hope the creator continues making other projects like this, but as is the case with many others, I mostly hope the creator doesn't abandon it midway through.

Plus:

• The art style is very, very good! The lines and color that can only be made by an excellent artist.
• The character design is the best! The girls are -holy mother of mammaries- HOT! Especially Myrtle with her wet dress!
• They also have personalities. Although the way they talk is kinda similar.
• Side characters are also very well designed. Even the faceless guard is an interesting character.
• The humor is real funny. Some of them are creative.
• The world design is good. The places, buildings, and small details are tasteful and with great aesthetics.
• The gameplay is simple yet doesn't feel like chores.
• Sound effects is also well crafted.
• There are tons of movements. The maps have animation, the backgrounds have animation, even dialogues have so many animation. I can't imagine the amount of time it takes to code and draw them all.

Minus (not really):

• The story is not fully developed yet. I'm not sure if the developer is going to make the lore deeper. There are creatures like pixies and orcs, so I think there should be more back story to the game world.
• The animation is good enough, but I think it is not up to the quality of the art style.
• The penis is too big.
• See, I'm struggling to find a bad points about this game.

If the developer really manages to fill all the map with contents, then this game deserves a price of an AAA videogame. It is THAT GOOD.

Still under construction but assuming it gets finished this game will easily be an S tier display of storytelling and art. Gives similar vibes to summertime saga with a fantasy element while still being clearly its own beast with its own vision and style

What a great game. Low on content so far, but based on what is available, this may turn out to be an amazing game. So far the writing, animation, and humor are all 5/5. I also appreciated the fact that there was an ingame guide that helps you in case you dont know what to do next. Amazing QOL feature.

From now this is my one the best visual novel ever.

I began to playing the game at late night, at the ending of it was sunset of next day when i noticed the time. So, do i need to say anything else?

I have never been more disappointed at the start of a game then I was with this game. But, that's okay because the rest of the game is a banger. The game is short and the content in it is pretty limited as of this review, but it's enough to show you that real thought and passion has been put into the game.

What I gotta say. The art is outstanding. Probably the best 2D art I found so far. And the story looks really interesting too. Gotta put this on my top tier list. Really can't wait for what come up next. Hopefully the update sequence will also as great as the art.

My usual disclaimers when writing reviews on here are that A. I am here for the "plot" not the plot and B. I generally dislike visual novels. So take both of those into consideration for my review when thinking about this game.

Pros

• Stunningly gorgeous - Just in general the art of this game is incredible, the locations are bright, vibrant and lovely. The characters are unique and incredible. Even the map, the menus, everything about this game has quite possibly THE BEST art of any game on this site. Bar none.
• Girls - Even having just said the above, special attention has to be given to the girls: they are so... Sooo... Fucking hot...
• Sex - It's a porn game. It has no delusions of grandeur and isn't trying to be anything else. For every instance of story progress it feels like you are rewarded with a sex scene and those sex scenes are insanely good. The animation is basic but exactly what is needed meanwhile the writing is hot. SCALDING hot. The whole mechanic of "keep clicking to see more thoughts/dirty talk" is just perfect.
• Setting and story - As always this is less important for me in porn games... Well good news, it's not really that important here either! Your character is here to get laid by any means necessary, even if that means an epic sprawling adventure, as long as there's pussy at the end of it! It's just that perfect mix of silly and ridiculous but still somehow fitting with porn logic.
• Funny - A very rare compliment here which I think is thrown around too often. Too many games use puns and memes and are then called "funny" when they elicit at best a smile. What a Legend actually made me laugh out loud more than once.

Mehs

• Content - It's early days. Expect to be super disappointed by how quickly you'll manage to do everything. [EDIT (made after v0.6): As of version 0.6 there's now a decent swathe of stuff, and I'd say top to bottom it would take a good 5-6 hours to see everything so far]
• Kinks - Trust me the sex is hot as fuck and looks like it'll include a lot of amazing scenes. My one teeny-tiny quibble with it is that, based on the predicted "unavailable" scenes, it seems like it's most likely going to remain pretty vanilla for around 95% of the game. Limited roughness/force/domination, which happen to be personal favourites.
• Sex never gets "intense" - In line with the above, it somewhat feels like a lot of the sexy scenes have the issue of starting off nice and slow, building up to an intense finish, but then the actual climax is never AS passionate or intense as it feels like it could be. It has the issue that it feels more concerned the aesthetic of the scene rather than just making it STEAMY.

Cons

• Celestina the matchmaker - A bit of an unfortunate complaint given that, at this point, it's unlikely to be changed dramatically. This is also a minor story spoiler so click at your peril: In short, you get special glasses which turn Celestina the matchmaker into a gorgeous busty blonde bombshell who you can fuck. The problem is that this is only an illusion and she is still the extremely ugly old lady (designed to be ugly, if I may add). The knowledge that when you fuck the illusion you are still fucking that hag is more than enough to not only ruin the individual scenes but kind of spoil the sexy mood of the rest of the game...
• Development time - Another relatively important consideration, which I can only describe as a negative is the development time. All that truly lovely art has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is apparently just ONE person. Meaning that the actual time for updates is achingly long (in excess of 4 months per update) giving the impression that the game won't be finished for at least another 10 years... I know this is just the sacrifice we make for the high-tier visuals, but it's unquestionably frustrating.
• Massive lack of choice (EDIT made after v0.6.01) - It has been a while since I wrote the rest of this review and I feel somewhat compelled to reduce the overall score of my rating because of this. During the early updates this was less noticeable, but as time has progressed it has allowed the extremely shiny veneer of the game wear off and now this issue is much more noticeable. The game has extremely limited interaction and just about no choice system within it (barring the odd dialogue choice which does not seem to affect anything). This absolutely demolishes any replay value and actually also makes some elements a bit strange to be included.

What a Legend is relatively new on the scene here and yet has an already stupid amount of reviews and upvotes. I'm here to tell you right away, unlike other new releases which got crazy popular almost overnight, it deserves all of the acclaim it has earned.

Surface level alone the art is easily among the best, if not the outright best on the website. It's unique and super high tier, evidently a lot of love has gone into the design there.

The game also is promising to be absolutely epic. The map, most of which is currently empty and unavailable, is enormous, and so promises to be a genuinely epic adventure with so much hot fucking and sexy scenes I genuinely was a bit stunned by how much they seemed to suggest will be in the completed product. My one concern there is that, given how big it clearly is intended to be, if it won't end up being too ambitious and collapsing under its own weight...

Beyond that, the game basically plays like Summertime Saga (one of the OGs of porn games). That's if Summertime Saga had art that was about 10 times nicer and the grind was actually super engaging and enjoyable...

When I first wrote this review I genuinely had to hold myself back from gushing too much because it felt like the gorgeous art style and scaldingly hot sex scenes just absolutely carried the whole game. It was a genuine breath of fresh air.

Now however, things have changed a bit. We’re a good few more updates in and that has allowed me time to get used to the nice graphics and honestly that’s allowed a bit of a problem to rear its head.

With no apparent choice system the game honestly starts to feel a little bit slow as time goes on. You start feeling less and less involved and less like your character is “yours”. It wasn’t as obvious at the start that the whole thing might as well have been a kinetic novel, rather than a dating-sim type thing.

One thing, for example, is the system by which the game will have the protagonist “THINK” about a solution to the current problem with the current love interest. The longer this goes on, the more odd it feels to include this, because all it adds is additional text filler. There are no multiple paths, there’s no puzzle solving gameplay, it’s just an excuse for the MC to stand there and come up with the next solution (likely amusingly retarded solution of course) to the current problem.

I want to be clear, I still think What a Legend is probably an A-tier game on this site. The writing is great and the visuals are STILL amazing and the sex is STILL super fucking hot. However, I have to admit that given the lack of choice, replay value and overall involvement of the player, I actually think it is somewhat overrated and does not deserve quite as much praise as it seems to have got.

The best porn game I've ever played. Insane amount of polish and detail, lovely art, the writing, and humor are suprisingly charming and not at all annoying (like in most such games). Can't recommend this enough.

This game is an all-round experience. The artwork is amazing, almost too good to define and the story and pacing is admirable. This game here has the potential of being the best game on this platform if the developer continues in this path. I can't wait for the future releases.

This is without a doubt the one of the best game I have played on here. Everything from the visual design to the mechanics, to the music, the character design, and the writing is absolutely top-notch. The MC is really likeable and funny. First things first I just want to say I am really looking forward to see where this game goes and I know its early days so I am sure any criticisms I have will be resolved in the future.
Pros

• Judging by the world map size the devs have a lot planned so hopefully it'll quite the sizable game once finished.
• The art is obviously fantastic and I think all UI, menus, landscapes and the characters presented so far look amazing.
• The characters are well written and have great individual personalities, that goes for all characters men included.
• What little music there is very nice and relaxing. Hoping they add more as most areas of the game are void of music. The ambient world sounds are equally great.
• Sex scenes are well done and the player can control things like speed, positions and when to climax.

Cons

• Choices don't matter. For example the MC gets berry juice on his hands. you have the choice to either wash your hands in the river or lick your hands clean. No matter what you pick the MC will lick his hands. This kind of thing happens pretty much for all choices.
• The main story right now is a little bit boring, "Do this and I'll have sex with you" kinda deal but I'm hopeful it picks up soon.
• I know the bottomless coin purse is a joke, a joke I really do like BTW, but I kinda wouldn't mind if money was something the MC had to earn and had a use. I am easy either way though.
• The place names of most areas are quite unimaginative. I know its not much of a con but it caught my attention haha

Just stunning. The art for this is in a league of its own as far as drawn CG goes. A great eye for detail and smooth (albeit short) animations. No annoying dating grind mechanics or minigames and very light hearted tone. The game feels highly "polished" even down to the menus and achievements and I personally had zero bugs or uncertainties. Basically, if you enjoy "Summertime Saga", it's that, but better. Enough content to fill an afternoon even in this early version. (0.3.01)

Dialogue and story aren't brilliant but very solid. A few humorous scenes but nothing too memorable. So far very "vanilla" content, which is missing a lot of opportunities in a medieval fantasy world. Might stay that way however since it's Patreon funded. Also (again, similar to Summertime Saga) you have to be okay with playing a goofy wet wipe of an MC that gets handled rather than handling things himself.

I'll be keeping an eye on this, or maybe even both. I had a great time playing it. Highly recommended.
