Like the title says, What is the most important reason you like a game?

I suppose all reasons are important, but maybe some more so than others.

I did chose to distinguish between "Story / text quality" and "Branching storyline / Multiple endings" because, frankly, quite a few games are poorly written / translated, but still interesting to play because of the branching storyline.

Of course there are more reasons to like a game, so please specify if your main reason is something else.

Personally, I'll vote for "Branching storyline", but I'm very interested in hearing some opinions.

I think the quality of the story will always be a major part of what I look for in a game, but branching endings is right behind it as an alternative.

I'm not too into TF games, but if it doesn't have a branching storyline, I won't even bother, regardless of the text quality. I'll at least check it out if it does. Some of the more popular games on this site (i.e Big Brother, Summertime Saga, etc.) all have a good combination of all the choices in this poll, which is probably why they're the most popular.

For me if it has a decent storyline I can overlook the grammatical and spelling errors in the game and the artwork matches up to the storyline with branching elements to it

You should also add animations. For me animations and artwork is the most important, after that the story :happyblush

I see that "Story / text quality" is winning, but, let be honest, most of you (not all) usually just look at the screenshots, and if the art is shitty you don't even care to try it and check the plot.

I can get straight up porn anywhere and there are some amazingly talented SFM creators that cover a lot of fetishes so i'm not here for fap material alone.

I like a good story. I don't care if it's a silly plot or it has holes or if it makes no sense as long as it's entertaining and makes me want to see more.

Well thought out characters are another. I don't like women portrayed as morons. I'm not an SJW by any stretch of the imagination but idiocy doesn't turn me on. Those games like Road Trip where women end up getting fucked for the most ridiculous of reasons irritate me more than anything. Not because i'm a white knight wanting to save all women but because it's cheap and insults our intelligence.

If the best you can do is having a kid tell a grown woman he's seen someone touch her arse and if she doesn't let him fuck her he'll tell her husband .... come on, just come on.

Ranting aside, that's it. A good story that's had some effort put into it and characters that make me want to care about them for good or for bad.

Ethan's Legacy was one of the first games I played here and it hooked me. Sure it had holes but it kept me wanting to see more and I genuinely enjoyed the characters he'd made. It saddens me to know it will never get finished. Dreaming of Dana has a great story and some fantastic characters. I Love Daddy has some of the best writing seen with great humour. Teachers Pet has an interesting take on an old method (mind control drugs) but does it with good characters and good writing. Dating My Daughter has a couple of characters I really like and the plot is pretty decent to keep me going.

There are more, I really like CYOA games, some of them have great writing.

TL;DR, story and characters keep me playing.

To me it's three things, and I''m surprised you didn't list the third one.

Genre/Fetish is the first. Honestly I just don't enjoy games that don't have corruption of some sort. I can watch all kinds of porn and read all kinds of story, but for games it just gets boring, for whatever reason.

Second the quality of the writing. That's pretty self-explanatory. Bad writing ruins even the games with the best art.

And finally, Gameplay. Whazzat? Porn doesn't need gameplay? Very true my friend. But then I'll just go watch porn, and not play a game.

I really enjoy Noxian Nights, or Queen Opala II, or Mature Quest, because on top of being good porn games, they are good RPGs. Even if the games are generic RPGs, they are very balanced, bosses are challenging, there are things as optional sidequests and optional content, and fun stuff like that.

Heck, I honestly can't even enjoy Queen Opala II as a porn game very well, since the porn scenes are so far in-between and, well, not really my kind of fetishes most of the time, but I still beat it just because of how good an RPG it was.

By comparison, take Big Brother, which does have good art, and good writing, and corruption... but it's just so boring to play, what with how slow the story proceeds and how you need to farm money.

Or most eroges. Unless they have plenty of options, I just can't enjoy them, no matter how well written, artsy, or how much of my fetishes they have, I just don't like sitting and clicking to read text for half an hour until I get a real choice input.

I am going to rationalize artwork here. But it is important to note that I am using the games for a masturbatory purpose.
Since I would use artwork alone, a movie or picture as pornography, it has to be the most important part. Because while story and gameplay are important aspects, they can not be used as pornography alone.

My favourite games, that I come back to, are the ones that entice me with their art.
The best story I have seen in an erotic game is the one in euphoria, and I have never returned to it.
The best gameplay I have seen in an erotic game is the one in Rance VI, and I have never returned to it.

Story is the most popular choice so far with 37.8% of the votes.
But that strikes me as a bit strange, because there are plenty really great erotic stories at plenty of sites.

To be honest, the quality of most stories of popular games does not even come close to the level of good erotica writers, e.g. on ASSTR.

So why then go for a game rather than a well-written piece of text-only erotica?
That must be artwork, branching storylines or gameplay...

And finally, Gameplay. Whazzat? Porn doesn't need gameplay? Very true my friend. But then I'll just go watch porn, and not play a game.
That's what I meant by Game Engine, although that's perhaps too specific.
I guess you can make a game with good gameplay in different engines, so I should have elaborated a bit.

But I think that, for instance, RPGM has more options for creating a gameplay game than Renpy.
One of my favourites in terms of gameplay is Free Cities...

How I filter my games:
1)I will not even bother to read the description if the art is awful. (this bar is very low)
2)Check to see if it's in English. (this bar is pretty high)
3)Check tags. Some are instant boner killers (scat, futa, tg....)
4)read opinions about story. (don't care if people hate it, I want to know what the focus will be)
5)read opinions about developer (I won't bother if dev is a milker)

I am actually positively surprised that story made the race in this poll as it is my choice anytime but as lexus33 stated art and I would add kinks are a barrier to overcome first before the story gets a chance. I can only agree with ThorMcBalbo as most games in my subjective opinion ain't giving enough focus on story leading to me quickly losing interest.

Had to think hard about it, because of "all of the above", then realized that some of games I really liked (adult or like that games) have a little other then story and text - Embic of Wulfhammer and The Endless Worlds. There are other games I like too but... the story is the best :)

1. Visual
2. Gameplay Mechanic
3. Genre & Story

Why?

If it looks like cancer i wont play it.
If it is terrible to navigate i wont enjoy it.
If it aint my genre i aint playin it.

Toss up between story and visual

Followed up by game play. I.e battle system, corruption system, and unique clothing with unique dialog.

Then by genre and fetish.
