I think its fair to say that many of us who have been around since the beginning of the sites creation have seen the trend in developers moving away from RPGmaker to Renpy and html and now to unity, unreal, godot etc. As such i just wanted to know which of the engine do most prefer?

I prefer RenPy with Unity being a close second. I like the default interface in RenPy better. I think Unity may be more constomizable but also probably requires more coding expertise. Most of the other platforms I actively avoid. Unreal is ok as well but doesn't seem very popular for Adult games so I haven't had that much experience with it.

Sadly, RenPy is too easy to use - it's the knee jerk response that everyone reaches for (along with the generic stock Daz models). Using engines like Unreal is simply beyond most people's ability.

You can make bad games with both.
A game engine being easy to use is not a con, but a pro... You are thinking too highly of Unreal, a newbie can easily get started there and make a pretty unstable game which will get abandoned in a few releases.

I mean, you can literally make a game without having to code in Unreal.

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

The one that fit the game mechanisms.

But generally Ren'py, because of its console, since too few games worth to be played without cheating like a pig.

Any is fine, more specific engines suitable for different games, eg. Unity for 3D, Renpy for exploration style games, HTML for more story driven games

I feel visual novels wind up too limited and unity games tend to fall flat on their face when they hit the limits of the Dev's skills and assets.

If you have to ask what engine to use to make a game, the answer is RPGmaker.

I love Unreal for the top quality in 3D. RPGM for good quality artworks and text that creates better involvement. Also ease of use.
While Renpy ain't bad but after you play some of them, next games lose most of their originality.
Lots of good projects are created with "other" engine.

Well, i usually prefer Renpy, because I think Visual Novel style story telling tends to work more when trying to tell a story in the first place... And Renpy is designed with Visual Novels in mind... Also, I've seen plenty of developers use Renpy to include some more game style mechanics, so it's not impossible to do it...

I tend to avoid RPGMaker like the plague, mostly because I'm not into old-school top-down 2D console style game play... I'm just not into that style of game grinding to eventually open up some story board type content...Maybe back when that was the cream of the crop in general normal games, but not in this niche industry...

Unity is o.k., but it lends itself more towards the arcade game style play... Yes it can be used in a similar way as Renpy to make Visual Novel style games, but it's not really what it's intended for... It's not designed for easy access to save/load and what not, like Renpy is... Unless the developer goes out of their way to include it, there is no rewind or skip function, and other story telling functionality in most Unity VN/Games I've tried thus far... It's a decent engine for including more built in visual gaming quality, but harder to incorporate other functions I enjoy with Renpy... Now, that doesn't mean there are not some good game focused Unity games out there, or that there are no story focused Unity games out there, but I do find the ones I've tried to be less about story telling and more about general game play to unlock content... Initially when Unity began becoming a thing in this industry, some developers designed them to require Internet Access while they were running or just to start the VN/Game... To me, that is a very big NO-NO... I don't know what information is being sent/received, and how can I trust some Joe off the street with no real credentials to back up their sincerity and/or claims of innocence?

Thus far I've never been impressed with ANY erotic themed Unreal Engine based VN/Game... You may be able to create 3rd person 3D adventure style games with it, but most have been rather low res, or the animations tend to look a bit archaic with clipping and so on...

I've tried a few QSP and HTML based ones, but mostly the Text Only and a few Text/Still Image Hybrids... The issue I find with QSP many of the times, is that production is slow (which is a complete surprise given the tendency to not have many actual images) and many of the times the products I've tried tend to be riddled with bugs or it crashes with some choices... It's rare to find a good text or hybrid VN/Game using these engine formats... Also, a big pet peeve, I can not stand the ones that use stolen Porn images from other porn sites... First off, in most cases they did not get permission from the companies or individuals who's images they are using (which is illegal)... Secondly, if I wanted to look at real porn, I can literally find millions of videos on the internet for free to watch as my heart desires... Third, it seems to me that steeling other peoples real images to make one of these VN/Games is a lazy cop out to doing the real work of either creatively creating original images or collaborating with other folks to make original images/animations... If that isn't an option, then just stick to text, imo...

I haven't run into many Java based games that don't go for the stolen real porn images route... Perhaps I just haven't tried many thus far, but in the end I don't see many, here or anywhere else...

Not sure what engines they tend to use, but I've played a couple Japanese Visual Novel imports (translated into English)... Some I liked and some I did not like... My beef with many of these is when they require you to go through all the trouble of mounting a drive as though they were being installed from CD/DVD format... Or ones that require me to run an .exe file in order to install the VN/Game... I'm rather cautious on VN/Games requiring an Installer to get it up and running, especially in this market... And the couple times I tried the whole mounting thing, it either didn't work right or was extremely difficult to get arid of when I was done...

As to the other engines, I'm not familiar with them much...

I would say RPG Maker or Renpy, though it depends on the game itself. For a visual novel, Renpy. For an RPG, RPG Maker - but Wolf RPG also works.

It's very annoying when developers try to get too creative with their game engines - especially when they're trying to create something that could have easily been made in one of the two above, as creating a game in a major engine (Unity, Unreal) requires a LOT more tweaking to optimize it. Unfortunately, most developers don't know how to do this.

And, honestly, I don't want to have to load up a heavy game that devours system resources.

Ren'py, almost exclusively. I've tried other engines but they usually are very grindy games and I hate those. I would play any game if it told me a great story, gave me a lot of choice and flexibility, and didn't railroad the plot down my throat.

unity.jpg

in my opinion, unity has the most potential to become a massive engine for indie developer. the possibilities what game you wanna crate are sheer endless with that engine, while with ren'py or html you are limited and what you can implement.

Engine for what type of project?
Definitely Ren'Py for 3DGC visual novels.
But there are games for which RPGM is suitable, like for example Peasant's Quest .
Unity or Unreal Engine are a terrible choice for 3DGC visual novels, but great for 3D games.
It would not be possible to create something like Abandoned: A Tale Of Forgotten Lives in Ren'Py.
