For me it is:
- "interactive" combat- basically more than just "be offensive" or "be defensive" as alot of VNs have
- XP/level/ability system, so you can get a sense of the MC getting stronger

Some actual role-playing. I would like to be able to mold my character as I want through choices and actions. It doesn't even need to change the story as a whole, but affect the tone, dialogs, and how the events and scenes play out.

OK - I may have this wrong but
Aren't VNs and RPGs effectively opposite ends of a spectrum

A Visual Novel is where the creator guides the player through a story
(maybe with aesthetic options but not significant plot options)

An RPG (which I would expect to be open world) is where the players starts and can pretty much try anything
Due to the wide variety of options a lot of game progress is effected by RNGs (this also gives variation on replays)
Lots of things the player might try to do at the start can be fatal
There is a trial and error learning process (shortcuts available through help files and walkthroughs)
Progress consists of completing certain tasks / achievements / boss victories

And in between the two is where a lot of games lie
So the more options you allow in a VN - the more paths you need to maintain

As such the answer really depends
Do you have a story already outlined ?
How much variation do you want to cover (and maintain) ?

I prefer RPGs - but I think many who play porn games prefer VNs

While most western vns are just vns, japanese vns can go pretty deep with rpg elements.

Vn consumers go from people that just want kinetic novels with minimal interaction up to people that want full blown management/rpg/exploration mechanics into their vns.

maybe more
As a developer you should focus on what you want/can do and people interested in it will show up, simple as that.

i really hope that other devs consider to include some interesting rpg stuff
even in kinetic VN there is some rating counter systems that can be count as rpg right?
